rub strip removal without harming strips?

Warning: Old thread revival.
OK, I'm down to trying to remove the hardware on back of the rub strips on the passenger side door. I got to the rusty nut under the door seal towards the back of the door. (No door panel remover required for this. Just pull away the seal) I PB Blasted the nut and used a 6mm socket and it just broke off the nut and stud. Not quite what I wanted but...
My question now, is getting to the other nut or retainer, towards the front of the door. I can barely feel it with my fingers up behind a bracket in the door. (You have to remove the door panel to get to it) It "feels" rounded not like a hex nut. Any advise from experience, in removing this one?

you may not have a nut on the front,
it might be a push in type of fastener,
the strip will have a small ball end that pushes into a plastic clip,
the clip may snap , but it can be replaced,
peel back the rubber seal and look at it with a light and inspection mirror, this type of fastener is what the smaller mouldings are attached with

Also take into account the fact that if the paint is original, 17 -34 years old, the chances are that the paint will have faded, and be a different color to what is under the strip and about to see the daylight after all this time. (you may be lucky with a black car)

Using a long flat head screw driver, I put the end of the screw driver over the clip and used the door bracket as leverage. I pulled the screw driver handle towards me slightly, heard a little "snap" and the clip was out.
Now time to clean up all the old tape...

Warning: Old thread Re-revival.
This was an informative thread and I wanted to add a little bit to it from my recent experience.
Here are some pictures of my front fender (not door) with the front "spears" removed and before I started cleaning it up. They may include some items I was mocking up to fill them with. I believe all the side trim holes are all the same size on the 86.5, except the small one at the rear of each door.
^^^^^ 10mm orange beads in holes ^^^^^
Here is what's left of one of the retaining clips that I believe are used on all but the smaller hole at the rear of each door (which uses the threaded nut instead).
As luck would have it, I could not sufficiently clean up the mess under my right side (US passenger side) side trim spear. The car must have had some paint added at some point without trim removal because there was a paint layer to contend with, along with some sort of staining of the paint underneath.
So I am reversing course and am cleaning up the side trim spears, ordered new clips, and will be reinstalling with double-sided tape (don't know the thickness yet). Here are pictures of the mostly cleaned up spears (addressing the rust next) and the 3M cleaner I had handy which worked (I did not have 3M 08984):

NOTE the after market 3M DBT is not as thick as the Porsche door strip tape,
so if you use it it may not stick as well ,
it wont make full contact with the base.
Note Roger sells the correct Porsche 3M side trim tape
