Just WHAT record does the 928 hold???
I'm confused. I googled "fastest production car" and the 928 is a no show. In 1986-87 it was the F-40. 171 MPH was broken in the early 60's. Can someone clarify what record it holds?

Probably a sub classification related to true production car status, or stock showroom. (not a hand built one, or two off that the F40 is). It broke the record that was previously set at in the low 160s, so it broke the record pretty solidly.
Good question, and I dont have the actual answer.

IIRC it may have taken the record from another stock GT from back in '63...168+ mph.

No, it was a WORLD LAND Speed record for a production car.
remember, the class "production" has some kind of mass production behind it, not 268 units like the 959, or a little over a 1000 like the Ferrari F40.
I think the record was previously held by the 911 turbo.

I would like to find the list of cars that include the 928 on the net. If anyone can point me in the right direction??? I have seen the YOU-TUBE video and ads from Porsche but I want an independent verifiable link as to EXACTLY what record this car held....I as of yet have not found.
I'm not questioning that it won something...but it wasn't "fastest production car".....as I had thought.

Are you trying to settle a bet or something?
IIRC it's the top speed record for 1986 from a production car. Just that one year.
I've always questioned this too since the Countach and Testarossa are faster. Problem is, if they didn't run an "official test" it doesn't count.

It was the FIA Record as far as I can tell. If you look on their site about the records (http://www.fia.com/EN-GB/SPORT/RECOR...roduction.aspx) they have A BUNCH of categories. I'm sure with some more digging you should be able to find out just which category it was.

you have to check the FAI records.
It was the fastest production car, (world record) but you just have to find out what class of producton cars it won the record in. a search and using google sometimes only brings up the wikipedia and others that are not always full of the correct and complete data. again, one main source has the 959 as the record holder, but its production volume was only 268. (not really production volume). Remember,we are looking for 1986. Unofficially, it was 180mph at Nardo Italy, in march of that same year.

959 production numbers were to meet homologation rules of Group B FIA racing.

Mark, I'm not sure how you're defining "production volume", but I remember when the 959 came out that Porsche specifically made enough 959's to qualify it under some classification of "production car" for that year so it could compete in some specific production car race series. That's as specific as my memory is on that topic, which is hazy at best. And I might have everything wrong, but that's how I remember it. If that's true, though, then we have to be careful in what we mean by "production" vis-a-vis the definition applied to certain records or competitions.
