If the time ever comes... how much can I expect to pay for a full engine rebuild? If this is too general of a question. Please educate me..

 

having an idea of what's under the hood would help. What year?

I'd think a lot of that would also be a definition of "full rebuild"? Besides the obvious of gaskets/hoses/TB, what does the $4500 estimate get you?

 

928 Int have a couple of used for sale at far less a price.

 

Full rebuild:

Heads - 1200-3000
New Rings - 250
New Rod Bearings - 200
New Main bearings - 300
Resize big end of rods - 100
New small end bushings - 150
Coat pistons to reuse - 400
Redo Alsuil bores (optional) 400
Seals - 500
(Optional) - Drill crank for better oiling - 750
(Optional) - Balance - 500

And no, I won't add that up. I don't want to know.

 

I think I put about $3,000 into refreshing a GT engine that bent valves. I replaced everything but the main bearings and was very very happy with the results. I did all the work however.

And 500-1000 - thats not a very good estimate for doing it properly. Chamber cuts, valve spring testing, etc take time. I know how to do it wrong, and I know how to do it right. 16V heads are not cheap. You can't just bring them to anybody.

 

my price for heads was to have seats installed in the exhaust side, and 32 valves cut and 32 seats cut. And this price came from one of if not the most well known 928 engine rebuilders. I didnt make this up.

I was going to reassemble (and disassemble too), and the price was $500. I think its safe to say that they can cost more then $1000, but i dont think a whole lot more then that. I dont think it costs $3,000 to have heads rebuilt. Maybe if you go to larger valves and aftermarket seats and so on and so forth, but thats not rebuilding heads, thats a whole other turkey.

The car in question is a 32V BTW

 

I respectfully disagree.

most machine shops can handle 16V or 32V heads without any issues, as long as you are looking for a standard refresh.

race porting, 5 angle valve grinds, bigger valves, unshrouding, port matching, spring matching, and anything else you can think of.... is not work that I would trust to just any machine shop---with that I would agree.

and yes, 16V heads are cheap. a set of Euro's were here last week for $500 (?)

You are talking about 8V heads. I am talking about 16V heads.

 

dont forget all of the extras, pulleys knock sensors, CPS, TPS, Flappy pot, hoses, injectors, igniton wires, dist. caps, rotors

 

ok...so a full rebuild for a 32v 5.0L WITHOUT rotors, dist, caps, ignition wires and plugs is..........?
