I had a close look at a Japanese imported one. They have two batteries correct? and it needed a pan gasket. $$ for that. The thing gave me a headache. Makes the 928 look like a little 4 banger.

...just checked carsurvey.org, great place to get a read on ownership. it does have an attractive massiveness to it, so the owners are happy. but the weight is mentioned more than once. and the word "money pit".

In the BMW forums do you see 3-series and 5-series owners ganging up on 8-series owners?

Ha, touche! I was actually thinking about how 944/911 owners rag on the weight of the 928 as I wrote that.

get a 650i... u can get them w/monster motors (500hp iirc), 6 speed trans. more like a modern 928 would be. hot chicks optional. it's the 2000's studmobile that chicks can't resist, according to GQ mag. but GQ did note about a year (or so) ago that the 928 is also not a bad chick magnet, even though it came out when everyone wore bellbottoms, lol

The 8 was the 928 of the BMW marque.

One-to-one in redheaded stepchild status.

It would probably be best if most local Porsche dealers didn't touch 928s.

Watch out for the cost of shocks on the self leveling suspension, it is comical...

A friend had the 840i. Felt much larger then the 928, buit didn't seem to have any more rear seat space than the 928. We went out to dinner and I seem to remember both wives had to be pretzeled into the back, not much leg room back there. When I drove it, it didn't seem to feel very fast or nimble. Nice to look at from the outside though.

oh crap yeah! EDC III

These shocks were like $850 each from the dealer (at wholesale) for the E34 M5's. I imagine the price is similiar for the 8 series cars.

It took forever to find a place that could rebuild them and last i checked there still was never a real source for them, or someone found some guy in Brazil of all places.

Yeah those shocks are a complete joke!

In the end, its a fat cow (700 plus pounds), has less power (280-310hp) and is even more complex then the 928 and with an inferior (sedan based) suspension design.

The CSI version with some nice 18" wheels does look pretty good though

I bought a '91 850i black on black with a 6 speed-and drove it home from Long Island after riding the train .

This was about 3 years ago. The first thing I thought when I bought my first 928 was ; OMG, it takes up about 75% of my garage.... The 850 occupied the entire garage- end to end and almost the entire width. THAT WAS A BIG HEAVY MONSTER. I was travelling to Allentown everyday about an hour each way at 70 mph. The car got 16 on the highway and what felt like 6-8 mpg around town. I filled it up every other day. That got old REALLY FAST> I will say this about the 850i: If you have the money to feed the cars hungry appetite for gas, parts, and TLC- It is a stunning highway cruiser with the greatest interior!!! It's SO VERY COMFORTABLE. I sold mine to buy a ring for my bride [no peanut gallery please LOL]. The 928 interior is pale by comparison- but my perspective is skewed for many reasons. Here are some pics....... I bought the last 850csi shifter that BMW had in stock (so they said)it came from germany and took two months and cost $300, and I put wheels, exhaust and intake on the car. I do miss it, and would own one again if it fell in my lap and someone insisted that I pay half of current selling price. and oh, it must be a 6 speed IMO or you might as well buy the 840i, it's more nimble, better on gas, and actually feels MUCH sportier. What a trip! Thanks.

One thing that bugs me about that car is the fit between the front end and the hood is always ugly!
For that kind of money you would think BMW could do a better job.

Thanks for the info guys! It looks like it definitely is not the right car to restore to put a teenager in for her first car. I'd sure like to have one to play with though!
Maybe an older 3 series makes more sense.
