Actually, if you show up at Mercedes, with a 722 part number, they don't know what it is...they have no 722 numbers. These pieces are apparently pieces made by Mercedes, specifically for Porsche and not available through them.

The drain plug in the converter on my S4 had to be replaced, so I brought it to the local official Mercedes workshop and asked if they had "one of these" without telling what car it came from. The guy behind the counter immediately recognized it as the drain plug from an automatic transmission and gave me the correct replacement. There was some difference between the drain plug in the converter and the one in the oil pan, but I got the right one. I also got the right filter and oil pan gasket from the same workshop.

All the parts I changed had 126 parts numbers which seemed to correspond to the Mercedes parts numbers.

BTW, the 722 numbers are quite possibly ZF parts numbers.

Here are some MB cars fitted with the 722.3 series auto transmissions.

1995
C220 ........ 7.1 ......... 12.3 .... 722.423/W4A020
C280 ........ 7.1 ......... 12.3 .... 722.424/W4A020
C36 ......... 7.1 ......... 12.3 .... 722.424/W4A020
E300D ....... 6.3 ......... 12.3 .... 722.435/W4A020
E320 ........ 6.9 ......... 12.3 .... 722.369/W4A040
E420 ........ 6.9 ......... 12.3 .... 722.366/W4A040
S320 ........ 6.9 ......... 14.8 .... 722.508/W5A030
S350D ....... 6.9 ......... 12.3 .... 722.367/W4A040
S500 ........ 8.7 ......... 12.3 .... 722.370/W4A040
S600 ........ 8.7 ......... 12.3 .... 722.362/W4A040
SL320 ....... 7.2 ......... 14.8 .... 722.507/W5A030
SL500 ....... 8.7 ......... 12.3 .... 722.364/W4A040
SL600 ....... 8.7 ......... 12.3 .... 722.362/W4A040
1996
C220 ........ 7.1 ......... 12.3 .... 722.423/W4A020
C280 ........ 7.1 ......... 12.3 .... 722.424/W4A020
C36 ......... 7.1 ......... 12.3 .... 722.424/W4A020
E320 ........ 6.3 ......... 12.3 .... 722.369/W4A040
E300D ....... 6.3 ......... 12.3 .... 722.438/W4A020
S320 ........ 6.9 ......... 14.8 .... 722.508/W5A030
SL320 ....... 7.2 ......... 14.8 .... 722.507/W5A030

As advised the part numbers with 126 preface in the PET are the MB parts.

In the main I have found that the MB parts are cheaper then the Porsche supplied parts from MB, and in many instances are far cheaper when purchase from a specalist MB supply shop.

Did the ZF parts he sold you fit your transmission?

Sorry, I made a typo in that message. I got some parts for the car there, and they could get parts for the transmission. However, the parts were a lot cheaper at the Mercedes workshop.

I did the Mercedes factory tour a couple of years ago and the guide was at pains to point out that all Porsche auto trans are made by Mercedes. It just makes so much sense that MB would make the complete transmission unit and then truck it across town to Porsche for fitment.

Uh....no. My 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SE left the factory with the 722.3, as did all W126 transmissions). The list posted earlier in this thread is not exhaustive. This one is more complete http://www.europeantransmissions.com/Application.htm Mercedes part numbers are confusing, because parts can have multiple part numbers (each part used to make a larger part has its own part number, and that larger part has a part number too).

722 is very much the start to a Mercedes torque converter part number, and the transmission is 722.3.

On the torque ratings, there are 2 722.3s, one is the W4A040 and one is the W4A055 (722.362, which I believe was only found on V12 Mercedes) The 040 and the 055 are torque ratings, if only I knew how to read them. If I had to guess I'd say 400Nm and 550Nm, though that sounds too low since it was put in cars that left the factory with more than 400Nm. Also, given that some (non 722.3) were 020, I'm guessing that's wrong. Nowadays they just say it (like W7A700 means 7 speed good to 700Nm, but I guess it was a code back then).

Great thread and I am resurrecting to try and gain further information.

The auto transmission pan seems to be special to the 928 - talking about 83 to 95 to be specific to start with. It has the rear pipe leading to the reservoir.

Porsche part number was 960 307 031 04 which SS to 722 270 111 2. I am trying to source the pan from Mercedes if possible and as already mentioned Mercedes does not recognize the 722 part number. A pan for a similar gearbox without the pipe to the reservoir sells for less than $100 which is a far cry from the $480 Porsche supplied unit.

If the pan was special to Porsche then I am probably wasting my time. Where any Mercedes cars that were fitted with the same gearbox using a reservoir instead of a dip stick when the gearbox was mounted directly to the engine?

Michael you missed the point - I can buy them all day directly from Porsche but at circa $500 which is way high for what it is.

If I can find the Mercedes part number and they actually made it then I am sure it will be much cheaper.

I should have figured out that I missed the point . I am sure you have already tried, but it comes up empty on the MB catalogue I use. You sell MB stuff Roger?
