Default Air Pump Removal

I am going to be putting an X-pipe on my car is there anything I need to know besides to remove the pump and associated piping? I'm asking because the original X pipe is rusted onto the metal pipe going up to the air pump. If I don't need it, I giving the old sawzall another job!

Don't bother with the sawzall, it's all easy to remove with some socket extenstions.

I have an 84 and just removed the catalyst with a Y pipe from Roger. when discussing the idea of removing the airpump with him, he suggested a 21" belt to drive the fan after removing the air pump. worked great.

I saw this comment in the threads provided above. I have no idea about the belt size or other details of the air pump on an 85+ 928.

good luck.

Ahh come on, you know how I like the sawzall! Actually the metal pipe that attaches to the cats is rusted at the bolt connection. I got penetrating oil sitting on it, so hopefully the sawzall won't be needed.

My 88 has an electric fan, so I don't have any problems with the fan and belt.

So it looks like I can just take the dang thing off and leave all the associated plumbing alone? If possible to clean things up a bit I would like to remove all the plumbing as well. I just don't know how this would affect the temp sensors though.

I have recently replaced the cats with an XPipe and free flow cats.
On a S4 the belt only runs the air pump and nothing else? Should I just cut the belt, or is it easy to remove the pump and plumbing back to the cat? I also would prefer to clean it up.

On the models where the air pump belt also drives the cooling fan, how do you delete the pump without adding a pulley? Seems like if the belt is loose enough to go over the pulleys it would not reliably turn the fan (since neither the crankshaft or fan pulleys are adjustable)??

Tim, you can just cut the belt if you want. I waited until my 1st state inspection w/ the X+cats and when it passed very well, that's when I removed all that hardware.

good idea, I will do that.
I still have the Ypipe to add to the '78, do you think I would gain anything by adding an electric fan vs a shorter belt?

For the older models where the belt runs the fan, you can use a 21" belt. You can get kevlar belts at Tractor Supply or other such farm stores.

Indiana we don't have state rip-offs, I mean inspections so I am just going to take everything off besides the temp sensors. This should reduce parasitic loss from turning the pump, weight, as well as free up some space in the engine bay.

Hold that thought for a couple of months. Something is in the works on that fan thing. But yes, you will gain a little bit by doing so.

But first I'd try to get the car so it's not a mobile flame thrower.

Yes, that is the plan, running well, then upgrade, I have a list for each car of the items that need attn, just wanted to get it added to the list.

By the way I am hoping the parts (or bits as Roger calls them) that will be sitting on my porch this evening will dampen the fire somewhat. I haven't looked under the car to see if I have blown any of the exhaust apart yet. But if I have, then that upgrade will get moved up a few spots on the list.
