I can vouch for the father/son road trip. I took delivery of my '79 in Denver and we drove back to California together. Here's my travelogue:

Bulvot -

I'll add my voice to the chorus of those recommending the southern route. A 928 is worse than worthless in serious snow - it's dangerous.

I'm in Provo, UT - so I'm so close to the beginning of your trip that I probably won't be of much help. However...

US-6 from Spanish Fork, UT to Price, UT goes up over the mountains. The road tops out at Soldier Summit around 7K feet. If it's raining or snowing lightly in the valleys, it can be snowing HARD through the canyon and over Soldier Summit.

In addition, highway 6 is notorious as a dangerous road through Spanish Fork canyon at best. Be a leetle careful.

So... check out the weather and keep an eye on the sky before making your decision to start up that particular stretch of road.

It adds roughly 400 miles or 9 hours to the trip (according to Google maps). Not exactly preferable, but if there is any reasonable risk of existing or upcoming inclement weather once we arrive next Saturday, then the southern route is the one we'll take.

If I had more time, I would drive out there with my truck and tow it back on a flatbed trailer, then weather wouldn't be nearly as much of a factor. But I only have the three day weekend available. Didn't expect to have to move this fast on a car so soon

V/r,
Chris
Although perhaps with some really good snow tires or chains you could venture through the Rockies, I spent a long, cold night on Donner Summit when just 4-6 inches of snow fell and my 928 became totally undrivable. Even your southerly route may not be far south enough to stay out of some snow.

And here I was kinda worried about my 300mi trip when I picked up my 928 in AZ.

Chris,

Have you considered having the car shipped instead of driving it? Check Intercity for shipping costs, might be worth it considering the way this winter has been going.

My .02 cents... I-70 is a good "middle road" (north to south). just watch the weather closely and chose which way to go.

When I drove my first 928 back from California to Michigan (late February), I planned on I-80 thru Montana but based on weather predictions, chose to head thru Utah on I-70. Missed big snow is Big Sky.

Then the weather predictions in Missouri led me to bump north back onto I-80 thru Nebraska. Missed big snow in the Missouri/Kansas.

Speaking on chains.... I missed chain restriction by one day before heading over the Sierra Nevada pass into Reno.

This is going to be a great trip for you and father. I will be looking forward to an invite to come see this beauty once safely back in NoVA. Perl is ready for a good road trip. Wish you well.

Makes a lot of sense...but no adventure. And besides, adventure make for abundant opportunity for lessons learned and cool stories to amuse friends later. Hey, as long as nobody dies.... ;-)

My trip cost me twice as much as it would've to have it shipped. The memories are truly priceless.

On lond trips like that, you see the best and worst of yourself. I remember my copilot and I had a throw-down around the back of the 928... on a public access road by the Great Salt Lake. Wrong turn.

Enjoy your trip.

I'm totally in favor of road trips, especially in the 928. When I bought my GT I drove it back from VA and I and my son enjoyed every minute (except in NYC traffic ). I still remember the cool events even considering it was a short trip.

But I've also done two cross country trips, one of which took place in January. Regardless of how much route planning we did we still managed to hit a couple of good storms which took their toll on the car. The trip was fun and worth it but after that trip in a then new Honda Accord I noted that the high speeds and salt/stone used on the road left wear patterns on the rocker panel and behind the rear tires on the paint. I would surely hate to see a nice 928 go through this.

Just sayin....

Monday its snowing in Denver and we are getting about 8 inches the mountains will be getting about 22 inches, rest of the week forecast shows warming temps in the later portion of the week but it will still be cold up in the mountains and new snow is projected for friday in the mnts.
I would suggest that you go south

Looks like at least one of the cars is RHD (bottom left photo - can see the pod through the open hatch).

if you do come this far I can meet you for some breakfast or lunch, I am about 8 miles off of I 70 at the
I 225 south exit. And if you have any problems I can fix them.
I hope that you like the car like I said the interior is awesome
