looks good

interesting hearing someone with a 928 saying "I just need to clear the carbs"

Q: Did you re-weld the bar to the end caps on the stock bar from Carl? Or is that how that bar was sent to you? From the pic, the welds of the standard bar to end pieces look messy honestly, the welds from the additions you made however look much cleaner so i am kind confused?

Im looking specifically at this pic below

no, we did not reweld the end pieces ... that are "928M" welds.Ok, just let us not excagerate this :

1) i have "all" certified welders in my company, some are rather "good" with aluminum... i can honestly accept that Carl don't pay such "expensive" certified welder to make those cross braces... which would again reflect in the end price... them quality is more than acceptable.

2) what we weld here are about the same plate thickness, so equal heating, good flowing of the weld seam... the end pieces are massive aluminium, i can imagine that is just a bit more difficult to weld against a hollow tube and creating also such nice weld appearance.

Nevertheless, aluminium welds are always a bit "brute" in comparison with, for example , stainless steel .

Barry, that bar looks awfully close to the distributor advance pot. Is there room to swing the distributor over its range of adjustment? Is there room for the engine to rotate under torque without banging the advance pot against the bar?

Why did you do this?

Wouldn´t an lexan or plexiglass window be much lighter and not that time/work consuming to install?

Don´t say you always wanted a 328

yeah i kinda agree.

I recently saw another 928 that had this kind of hatch, but i dont see the benefit.

From the profile it looks the same so design really isnt changed. and you loose all the functionality of the hatch itself and probably most of the visibility. Also i would think the rear 3/4 windows are a little odd now as they really now only look into the interior panels and a speaker.....i guess you did it to be different, but im not too sure i understand this mod.

I remember RUF did this to a Cayman and the car itself was awesome but for the rear hatch (which was similiar to this) but i think they did it just for the sake of modifying almost.

regardless, it looks like your shop there does very nice work and im sure it will turn out to be very well done. Just curious why you choose to do this?

Two others with this same type suspension bar support addition:

Tom Falkenburg's big bird car, and Louie Ott's car

perhaps they too can add to the discussion.

this mod, in addition to Carl's lower support bar, probably adds to the stiffening beyond what most "street "928's need, but what "race" 928's could take advantage of.

As to the hatch mod above, Dodge/Plymouth did away with the "tunnel" over thirty years ago with the Charger 500, Charger Daytona, and Roadrunner Superbirds......the tunnel was a aerodynamic nightmare at 200 mph, and filling it did away with making the rear end "light"---reducing lift. Daytona and Superbirds the received the high wings to further add down force.

Porsche did not put a tunnel on the 928 for a reason.

You do know the height of the wing is so the trunk still opens.

On both models, the spoiler was two feet high so that the owner could open the trunk.

the hatch i made was a idea as i had seen on a Strosek ... and to be my "personal" touch ...i just like it ,"mid engine" look ?
Ok, i had the means easely, it's bolted in , so i can replace it by a Lexan window in no time....as the weight isn't a great advantage : it's about 9 kgs , the OEM glass is around 11 kgs.... so no much profit. But it's on the rear ...
Now "lift" from it ? On the tracks i'm gonne run with the 928 , i don't get max speeds beyond 200 km/h .( and i like it that way )

I must be addicted to that look : have a oldtimer corvette '70 and my daily is a beemer 650 convertible ....
Without beeing "rude" to the 928 design, i found the rear window a bit "large"... also "afraid" from the heat input by sunshine...
some pics :
