Smile Calling 928 owners in the Manchester area, UK

Hi all,

I'm about to take the plunge into 928 ownership <gulp>. I've been lusting after a 928 for a long, long time but have never taken the plunge. I took one for a spin this afternoon, the first time I've ever sat in a 928 never mind driven one, so the experience has sealed it for me - I have to have one. So anyway, I'm trying to be brief, I'd like to know if there are any Porsche 928 specialists in the North-West of England (Manchester, Cheshire etc). I've done the usual Google search which has thrown up a few names but what I'd really like are some recommendations from you guys - quality of work, value for money, knowledge of vehicles, that sort of thing. Also, I'm a bit of a novice and consider myself to be at the bottom of a very, very steep learning curve - I printed off the checklist of things to look for and I'm convinced that what I saw today was a genuine 928 GT, in good condition backed up by an entire history plus receipts for nearly everything - so I'd like to take an engineer along with me on my next visit to make sure I'm not about to buy a complete turkey.

Sorry for the long post. First time poster, I did read the rules and promptly forgot most of it - sorry!

I hope the next time I post on here I'll have one of those rumbling sharks sat outside my house

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul & welcome
You've certainly come to the right place for info
You are in luck as one of the two top UK 928 specialists (quite different from a Porsche specialist) is in Bury.
Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank Motors in Bury is the man to talk to.
http://www.loebankmotors.co.uk/
I would take the GT to him to get a Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) before purchase or on agreement of purchase subject to inspection.
You should also join the email list on 928UK .www.928.org.uk
Ask on there for any info regarding history of any car & anybody local to go & look at it with you.

Paul
It appears the 928UK website & email list is down at the moment, its run by one guy,Angus & he must be away for a few days otherwise he would have fixed it by now.
I meant to ask ,which GT have you looked at ? (where advertised ?),only there has been talk of several GT's for sale on 928UK email list recently.

Hi Martin,
It's currently listed on Ebay. I'd send you the link but I'm at work (yep, you've guessed it, I'm not exactly busy this week) and the site is blocked. It's a 1989 928 GT, 145,000 miles, £5250. If you've got access then you'll find it. I drove very well, a bit of cosmetic work required to get it up to the level I'd like and some electronics needed sorting (intermittent sunroof, boot-lid auto-release not working), looked like the belt had been changed on a regular basis so I just wanted to get the opinion of someone who knew these beasts inside out. I printed out the buyers check-list (thanks to the authors of that one, superb for someone like me) and it ticked most of the boxes.
To be honest it's the first one I've looked at so I think I need to see a few more to get an idea of whether or not this is a good price for the age/mileage/condition. I've not seen many GT's for sale so it does make this one a little bit special.
Thanks
Paul

Somebody on the 928UK list asked about it , Smiffy replied , he's a very respected knowledgeable 928 owner , I would trust what he says.
"It belongs to a friend of mine, and it was advertised on 928uk a while
ago.He an honest bloke, so you can trust what he tells you (just ignore the
scouse accent.)

Smiffy"
Thats a very good price, to have the aircon working is a big bonus on a 928 too !

It does seem like a very good price to me. The guy was very honest, he pointed out all the areas that were letting it down and had a very genuine reason for sale. Next step is to get an engineer to go over it with a critical eye and get an idea of what, if anything, needs addressing.
I'm trying not to let my emotions get the better of me - as soon as I heard that V8 and felt the awesome power I was ready to hand over the cash :-D As I mentioned, I've never even sat in one before never mind driven one so I'm finding it extremely difficult to keep a level head. Love at first drive!

Thanks for your help and comments.

If there isn't obvious accident damage and '89 GT drives well all I would do is to check that it infact has GT engine and gearbox. 6k euros is so cheap price that its worth more in parts if major components are correct versions. I know UK situation is little different right now than rest of Europe but if prices keep on going down like this you soon start to loose fully ok running cars as spare part donors. This will eventually drive remainging complete car prices up again but it would be shame to see working cars to be destroyed like that.

Were the 928's not galvanised like the 944's were?
If so why is the rear quarter corroding?

Galvanised steel will still rust if you get a break through the surface. Same goes with the alloy wings which can bubble under the paint once they get started. It seems quite common on these cars to have some rot that needs sorting, you can't expect a 20 year old car to not have something that wants fixing body wise in the climate we have in the UK and the salting they do on the roads in winter. The important part is making sure you don't let it spread too far so it's cheaply repairable.

I asked about the car on the list, I've been a bit ill the last few days so haven't had chance to go take a look myself though. I'm more interested in another car but was looking around to see what is out there in case the other car has issues on inspection, the owner seems like a genuine guy and is happy to point out the problems with the body. From what i can see in pictures and info it needs some TLC in terms of wheels refurb, the paintwork plus i would probably change the radiator as it's got the engine oil cooler bypassed, he says thats no problem with normal road use but if using on track or high speed i would get that done.

Very topical! I posted thread today abo0ut rust in identical area on my 1988 S4:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...me-photos.html

Galvanising doesn't protect forever, especially in this area where the wheel splash shield allows dirt to be thrown up and trapped against the panel.

Well welcome aboard. Life is good in a 928. I have just returned from a trip to England. Landed at gatwick and went to Lakenheath for a week. London was lovely, and yes I had sun for a few days. Will most likely be back in late spring. Love the English girls and the weather keeps them looking great.

if this is a white GT with the GTS rear PU then the chances are its one that chris has been maintaining.
