Default Auto gearbox harsh into reverse

My gearbox is nearly sorted following pump failure, but we've hit a problem of sorts. Car engages into D nice and smoothly, but when R is engaged it is too harsh. Not a clunk or anything bad, just a lot more harshly than D. Pressure is good and as per WSM and workshop have checked the other possible causes as listed in the WSM - vacuum leaks, valve spring etc etc and everything checks out as good. Any ideas before the box comes out again to check the reverse bands, clutches etc? All worked fine prior to pump failure and new pump assembly has been fitted.
