Default Cats Off/RMB

Here in England, my MY1991 S4 doesn't need a catalytic converter to pass the yearly MOT, and I am considering a RMB...

Would it possibly be cheaper just to remove the Cats and put straight pipes there instead while still getting the sound of an RMB?

Many Thanks
rawky

My 91 GT sounded best with full factory exhaust and RMB. I gutted the cats and it became way too loud, ended up replacing the RMB with factory muffler.

So when you replaced the original muffler, did you get a sound similar to the RMB by itself? Which is cheaper, removing cats or a new RMB?

I have an X pipe and small resonators and the GT rear muffler it sounds good but not too loud .
With this system and a RMB instead of the GT rear muffler, it was NASCAR loud

Okay here is what I did. When I got the 90 GT it had stock exhaust except for RMB and sounded the best I've heard anywhere. In the quest for power I bought an exhuast from Oklahoma Foreign. I replaced the from headers through cats section AFTER gutting the cats ie., pulling out all the stuff with a wire with a hook on the end. With these gutted cats AND the RMB that was already on the car (stock GT baffles included), it was really loud and sounded like Friday night at the local dirt oval. I also was getting followed by patrol cars trying to decide if I needed a sound ticket several times over a week. I replaced the RMB with the rear muffler from the stock exhaust I had purchased. The tone was the same as with the RMB, but much quieter. Again I liked the tone the best with the stock exhaust with the sole exception being the RMB.

I've heard various people state that they find the RMB too loud and I just shake my head, so it must all come down to personal taste. I have an X-pipe with no cats and have an RMB as well. I couldn't be any happier with the sound. Great rumble at idle and still not overpowering on the highway.

On my '85 I have an x-pipe, no cats, RMB, and GT resonators. My Russian friend with benefits made the comment "I heard your car and it sounded like old Soviet farm tractor."

It wasn't that 90GT w/gutted cats/resonators/rmb was too loud for me personally. It's that I was tired of being hunted down and followed around by police officers due to the loudness. It's kinda the same with tires, cheap tires make more noise when spinning and bring unwanted attention.

I cut the cats out and put a Magnaflow X-pipe muffler in its location and ran 2 1/4 pipe back to the factory locations and put Magnaflow magnapack resonators and finished the pips to the rear with two 3 inch rolled, angle tips. Looks and sounds beautiful! The x-pipe really makes this thing sound MEAN!!!
