Question

Since we are on the subject of VIN numbers…I was wondering if there was a way to match the numbers stamped on the engine with the VIN number of the car its in?...a way to tell if the current engine in the car is the original engine for that 928, or if it is a replacement engine from a different 928..maybe even from another model year?

Short version is that Porsche knows but isn't telling. Long explanation is in message #17 in below thread.

Most owners manuals and option stickers just have engine type and model year part of the engine number. In fact I haven't ever seen even picture of one which has entire engine number in it.

Here's my owner manual page. It has the actual Engine number, just not the prefix of M28/12.

Very interesting. That is totally different style than stick on option sticker but has all the relevant info except gearbox number. Were such fill by hand boxes used in other than '83 MY owners manual?

My car has NO option sticker anywhere - nothing on trunk floor at all. I suspect its just different ROW vs US practice. I dont think any of the options listed above cover the LSD, but it is listed on the invoice. FWIW, invoice total shows DM104,000.

Stick use started in all markets in '81 MY IIRR. If there is no stick its either gone or someone didn't do his job right back then.
