Default Do 928's have matching numbers?

Besides the engine series number (M--/--) cast on the front of the block, are there any other numbers on the chasis/engine/ trans which match an engine/trans to a particular car ?

My 84 has a reasonable faxcimile of the vin stamped on the passenger side fender. Just under where the hood covers when its closed. The reason I say "reasonable faxcimile" is because the one on the fender is a ZZZ # but otherwise its the same. Whats up with that? It not a Euro and the fender isn't either.

correct there are vin numbers on the chassis which correspond to the public vin in the window BUT nothing on the car denotes the serial number of the engine for that chassis.

so apart from the engine one can match everything?
that sucks even more... you may have a ZZZ car but a POS engine... double bummer

Thats strange, I called Porsche here in Australia and quoted the VIN and Engine numbers to them. They replied saying that the engine is still the origanal. How would they know that?

Glenn, they probably are telling you that it's the correct engine for the VIN; this assessment is independent of serial numbers. For example, if you had a US 81 motor in an 82 euro, that can be determined from the numbers.

My car has a sticker that says its protected by ID guard, guessing it means various bits have a number on them.

Perhaps Porsche has a database that says what engine numbers were installed in what vin number.

Porsche has records of engine numbers to vin numbers because when 911s get stolen the engine number is listed as stolen by the number just as Honda serialized thier airbags so they could record it to the vin number so stolen airbags could be proven stolen.

HI I have a vin tag on my engine block, transmission and every body part, they all match however there is nothing on the build sticker that says what each parts SN is. Stan

I don't even have option codes on my build sticker. Only country code C11.

-I guess I must have been mistaken, but I thought that the whole "matching numbers" thing was done via book for the old American cars. That is, if you knew the VIN, you could look in a book and it would tell you what engine the car came with. There wasn't any indication on the car itself to indicate whether it had the original engine or not.

I have the original owners manual for my '85, and it lists the VIN and the motor serial number- they are written by hand on a sticker in the aft section of the manual, along with the transmission serial number.

N!
