Default Transmission Jack Suggestions... ?

I am about to pull the transmission on my M3, which is very light, but I will need to install the transmission in my race car (some day...). Since the 928 transmission is much heavier (@200lbs per one of Mr Bailey's posts). I am wondering whether anyone has any thoughts.

No lift for me yet, but the cars are relatively high on 6 ton jackstands, so good clearance underneath.

This looks like a decent option... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=3185

I wonder if I could use a motorcycle jack, as I could use it at times for my R1. Something like http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=2792

Thoughts appreciated.

I used a motorcycle jack (Sears - Craftsman) It had no problem lifting the tranny at all. Easy to use.

Thanks, I am talking about wimpy lightweight manual transmissions, even lighter!

Stan-

I used this HF unit:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=39178

Rated at 450 lbs, it seemed like it was it the limit of its abilities with the GT's 5-speed on it (filled with 4.5qts of oil, maybe 120-130 lbs?). At near full extension it was listing to port somewhat, I wouldn't try it with an auto. If I had to do it again I would have bought one of the motorcycle/ATV jacks.

Thanks, I was definitely leaning towards a hydraulic unit. Perhaps Sears motorcycle jack:

Stan, I dropped my trans and TT as an assembly, alone with just a floor jack and a few 2x4 and 4x4 blocks. Surprisingly little drama. It would have been easier with the crossmember out, but I just dropped the xmember a few inches, rotating on the Weissach joints. Trans came out forward over the crossmember. The assembly balanced perfectly with the jack under the front drain plug, and I could tilt it fore or aft with one hand. I had to lower it onto some wood blocks and grab the next bite with the jack on the TT itself just forward of the rear flange, as the assembly was too tall to just roll it out from under the car with the jack under the drain plug. With the jack in this location I had to press down on the forward end of the TT to balance it, but it was pretty easy. The car was up on 6 ton jack stands. Depending on how you approach this you may not need a trans jack at all.

The transmission is already out, I did it without the transmission jack, and have done it that way several times in the past. Once in the driveway on a slant

Of course dropping the transmission is much easier that way then getting it back in place, but I did manage that as well. I also proved they can be done by one person at the same time

I figure the motorcycle jack will be an asset and can also serve as a caddy for my R1. I ordered this one late last night: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...0191000P?mv=rr

Thanks for the thoughts and happy holidays!

Wow, that's a nice unit. Tempting, except for the lack of space here... also, I'm hoping that I don't have to pull the transmission again any time soon.

I picked up an ATV/Motorcycle jack from Northern Tool and it works perfect.

Stan, I have two of those motorcycle jacks (plus a third at my Dad's house). They are just taking up valuble floor space...want to "store" one for me?

You could pick up the OC banner and tuner @ the same time

Nice unit Stan, but thought I'd share that I disagree with the comments made on the HF 450 lb scissor style tranny jack. I've used it successfully several times to remove and install both 5-speed and automatics without issues

Jackstands keeps the tires from flatspotting.

How are you going to use that on your R1? There is no frame to speak of under the bike to lift, and thereks too much in the way for that style to lift the swingarm really well. I ended up with all pitbull equipment (front and rear) for my sportsbikes.

I own the atv jack from HF. Worked great when we dropped the motor out of my 914.
