I want to note that my 1989 model-year car was built in December 1988. For those celebrating birthdays based on model-year, there's a 40%+ chance that it was produced in the prior calendar year. Production lines convert in July-August traditionally, and new cars are produced to fill the market channels before formal release in September and October. So your car if an early serial number could easily have been produced in the Aug-Dec timeframe of the prior year. 4-5 Months of production the year before, 6-7 during the stated model- year.
The build month (12/88) on my car is listed on the doorjamb sticker by the VIN. The car wasn't sold until August of 1989, at which time the original purchaser was able to negotiate a whopping $1k 'discount' off the $84k sticker on this late-season purchase. PO shared all the purchase and pre-purchase paperwork, including the first written offer on a dealer scratch-pad, his deposit check with the offer, and the delivery payment check. Kinda nice to get all that history stuff with the car. The next caretaker of this one will get a very completely documented example. I've been a victim of less-than-thoughtful PO's on other interesting cars, and swear I will never be one of them.
