I was wondering if we can use the green wire to trigger an MSD ignition on an 83'? I am debating switching from the current ignition to MSD this winter as part of my Megasquirt project.
When I switched my 76 911 to MSD I used Pertronix to trigger the MSD and I would think that the Green wire is just sending a signal.
Am I thinking correct?, and what else am I missing?
Yes, however you can also use the old + wire to the coil.
I left the old ignition in the car and used it to trigger the MSD. Quick connectors to the coil and MSD, so if the MSD fails, it takes 10 seconds to unplug it and reconnect to the coil. Back on OEM.
Couple old pics from when I installed it. Note not the stock coil, but wires attach the same.
Note if you splice into the green wire it will work. If you run the green wire to the MSD and then use the MSD Tach out signal line, it will not. Our speedo's don't like the MSD signal.
I have read about your install where you are taking the signal from the green wire to the ignition into the MSD. If I do this it is because I want the MSD to control the entire ignition. I am getting tired of having starting issues related to "Porsche parts". The MSD would be independent of the relays that always seem to fail. How could we adress the tach signal, and any other signal that the green wire is connected to the car that I am missing.
If you splice into the green wire and allow it to continue to the stock ignition, you should be fine. My guess is the green wire connects to the magnetic pick up wires on teh MSD, inner wire to one and shielding wire to the other.
I believe SMTCapecod used the green wire and may chime in for better info. My new set up will bypass the stock ignition as well as my MSD distro has magnetic pick up and plugs directly intot he MSD 6al. I'll still keep my quick connects ready incase of failure, but they'll be taped off.

I can't even remember the specifics, search for the threads. I posted the rotor ordeal in the 928 DIY forum, not sure whether I covered wiring there. I did use the green wire directly. I got OK support from one Tech at MSD that had done a 928 install- though his recollection wasn't 100%. My experience was that they said I would need a tach signal modifier- but that actually didn't work and running the tach off of the MSD to the right terminal in the factory connector worked.
