Powerwise, the car is ok and will be working on getting some more testing on the 305s to bite up front. who knows how much power i would gain by the .5mm of lift anyway. If its only 10-20hp, I can bolt that on later. Right now, the main thing will be addressing the braking system. the drilled GTS rotors with spacers for the S4 calipers along with pagid blacks, will be the next step.
I have a free test day on Jan 4th to see i can get this beast to handle and brake a little better.
The "File" comment was for Brendan. .

If my budget permits, I would like to install Carl's stage 3 (not sure what else to call them) cams into my stock 79 track car and do a before / after this winter. I would like to "break in" the new cams with an old motor before building my new short block.
It's the off season, you have time.
Um.......a file? Would anyone else like to handle this one?

I still have the Holbert original cams with the missing teeth. There was a guy that was pushing his shop that could replace the sprokects with a top secret process used for changing sprockets in industrial applications. maybe i could send those off for base circle griding and some teeth replacement.
OR, are they just paper weights? (Basically GT cams)

are these actually welded or plasma sprayed?
From our webpage:
To make our camshafts, we start with an original Porsche camshaft for your car, so you know that the fit, finish, and materials are the best they can be and exactly right for your 928. The cam lobes are hard-welded up to a Rockwell 60 spec and then re-ground to the lift and duration we specify using computer-controlled welding and grinding processes to achieve the highest quality result. The temperature of the cool-down after welding is strictly controlled to eliminate glazing and heat-checking. Then the camshaft is magna-fluxed to check for cracks and fully inspected. Finally, the camshafts are electrostaticly coated with a Molybdenum spray for oil retention during the break-in process.
The result is a superior-quality camshaft with a 1-year cam lobe wear warranty, (most cam manufacturers only offer a 6 month warranty. An examination of the photographs below will speak volumes as to the quality of these fine camshafts for your 928.

See if you can get the DVD of "The worlds fastest Indian"
Casting new pistons for the race bike by adding "a bit of Ford piston, they use more magnesium ....."
apparently most of the detail in the film is true to life.

Somebody had to say something
I love that movie, he was an amazing gear head. Even if he didn't know 100% why some of his stuff worked. Reminds me of me

Carl...I have some old 32v cams laying around. PM me if you have a use for them. The lobes are fine, but the teeth look like they're shorter than usual.

I pictured you Tim and Todd sitting around the melting pot, making my pistons, until i saw the box on the first pictures of the Holbert stroker JE pistons.

Well, we were doing fine until I suggested we try square pistons and Tim wanted more of a pentagon shape. Todd just quietly backed away and called JE.

So when they refinish the lobes, did you define the lobe taper?

Carl.........would you have any potential HP numbers for a cam swap?
I'd be trading stock S4 for either GT or the mild street race cams...........thx.

Dave,
Do the sprocket teeth on your cams look shorter than the ones in my pictures?
You can send my photos of them to carl@928motorsports.com and I'll have a look at them.
More importantly, send me the casting numbers from the cams (they start with 928...) and I can tell you what they are from.
There was a fella a few years back in Chicago who advertised he could repair broken 928 cam sprockets. I dont think hes in business any more, and I dont know if his priocess worked.

Malcolm -
Its hard to separate dyno charts and say "this is the improvement due to cams" because the engine builder probably also changed pistons and the CR, and perhaps the intake valve size at the same time.
At the moment - since I just brought these cams to market, I am without before-and-after dyno charts for each of them just yet.

thx Carl; I ask the question as Porsche published HP figures of the S4 and GT with little difference than the cams.
If the sport/light race cams give good idle and low speed driveability that may be the right choice for my application.
Next question; how do the hi perf cams affect the addition of the supercharger?

can't recall direct but i have seen a site with cams on which they gave a gain of 10,20 to 30 HP related to 3 different cams.... the 30 HP was the full race cam , only working above 4000 revs...
is this a good idea of what we can expect ?
