How do the intake sleeves go on
Im in the middle of putting intake on,and was wondering how the sleeve has a ridge on it fits together with washer rubber piece etc thanks for input.

IIRC the sleeves have the ridge facing the bottom, that is based on one of the pictures you posed in the seat cleaning thread
RV I think he is talking about the sleeves that are used to fasten the intake to the heads, they prevent over tightening of the bolts.

Ridges down. Insert spacer into bottom of (new) rubber pressure gasket. Lube top of pressure gasket. Thread gasket/spacer onto intake stud after intake in place. Slide pressure washer onto gasket. Thread nut. Torque to 15 n-m / 11 ft-lbs. If you over-torque the nut, the pressure gasket will crush and shred. Lube on the gasket allows the pressure washer to turn smoothly on the gasket as you torque. No lube can result in a false torque reading and a shredded gasket at too-low a torque.

i thought this guy was asking about something totally different.
That big silver do dad your trying to bolt up, yes its part of the intake but intake is a fairly general term, i would have called that the intake manifold. When i first read your post i was picturing the intake tubes on the US 85-86 cars but didnt say anything cause you have in your avatar box 89 S4 as your "location" So i assumed you were talking about an S4.
Yes the flared portion of the crush sleeve goes towards the head as this helps limit the rubber grommet from being completely crushed when its torqued down.

actually the flare of the spacer keeps the intake manifold gasket correctly centered while providing a certain amount of crush to the intake spacer grommets,
IE you cant tighten them so much that the nut washer is clamped against the intake housing.

To add to Daves comments I worked from the middle out when tightening the intake. Be very careful as the torque is quite small..............get the correct t.wrench.
