One of the sixties Lotus road cars formerly in my collection has a badge on the rear sail proclaiming all the years (up to that year) that Lotus won the World Champion Car Constructors award. It's a chronic reminder that the performance is fantastic, but that everything breaks or fall off after after 500 miles. IIRC, similar badges were seen on Lotus cars well into the seventies.

IMHO, this sticker belongs on the years that the factory installed them. YOMV, of course.

I think its a cool sticker. I wish I had a '78 shark to put one on, but I might buy a sticker & keep it displayed in one of my curio cabinets that I keep my car collection, etc. in.

Hacker, it's a *sticker*. It's a bit of fun, it's relevant only to that small percentage of the population who even know what a 928 is. For those of us who care, I have reproduced the exact shade, typeface and gold metallic of the original. The hardest part was recreating the period "Porsche 928" logo in that awesome 70s script.

It was really difficult as we couldn't just take a scan from my owner's manual, the quality wasn't good enough. So my girlfriend, who is a graphic designer (and tolerates losing me to the cars and the nurburgring several times a year) recreated it by hand (~10hr work). I have always loved that particular logo, thinking out loud maybe I should create a new design without the car of the year, maybe a land speed record one for S4 owners, or just a generic Porsche 928 one.

But back to the point, it's just a little recreation of a cool bit of 928 history, nothing more. Imagine how stupid I felt logging on last night with my gf looking over my shoulder seeing all this bitching! I was actually kind of hoping (when Alex told me he had posted on rennlist) for a similar reaction to the 1978 colour chart post. Never mind.

I guess some of us are more interested in the ephemera of 928-dom than others!

Not even the same sport, it's not even the same league, hell, it's not even the same ballpark.

Spoiler & brake's = upgrades for performance (spoiler holds the brake ducts not offered on a 79). My 79 also has S4 brakes / suspension, the wheels are over an inch wider then any factory phone dials offered for the 928 (custom made).

Sticker = brags about an award that was awarded to a single year (79). See the Al Bundy reference for clarification.

Not to mention the factory did eventually add the spoiler / brakes to the early chassis. They never put the "car of the year" sticker on anything 1979 or newer. Why? Those years were not given the award.


I can just hear the conversation as some random person is looking over your car, sees the sticker:
"Oh, this is a 79? Wow, looks great for that year!!"
"UM, no, it's actually a 1987S4...yadda yadda upgrades."
"Yea, but the sticker says 1979......"

Yes this is a very silly argument, I stated an honest opinion and the OP felt the need to criticize me for it. Well boo-hoo if he doesn't agree with me. Put an "I Love Lucy" sticker on yoru car for all I care. Why not a "competed at LeMans but didn't place very well" sticker?
Some of you guys really need to lighten up a bit. We are just having some fun.

I also have a small "Porsche World Champions 1976" roundel on my 79, I have no idea what they even won that year, I presume it refers to the 936/Ickx victory at Le Mans, I just put it on there cos I reckon it adds to the vintage / retro feel on an early car.

So your 79 has S4 brakes and suspension? I have adjustable Konis and 600/400 Hypercoils on my car (great kit from Carl), and the original braking system. My main criticism of it is wooden pedal feel, I can lock the brakes if I really stand on the pedal so I'm in 2 minds whether it would be worth the upgrade to an S4 setup, with the accompanying increase in weight.

Speaking of which, what wheels and tyres are you running? I have 225/50/16 all round on the original 7" phone dials. I have a 32mm spacer in the rear to fill the arches. I'm reluctant to increase the rubber at the moment because a) I love the phone dial wheels and b) the car has plenty of grip and loads more would make it less fun to drive (it has the stock 240hp engine). Oh yeah and c) it would increase the weight in the worst place to increase the weight..

If it's only a street car your setup sounds fine. Mine is on the track 90% of the time I'm driving it, so the S4 brake's were a big upgrade over the stock 79. Stopping distance takes a back seat to cooling for this upgrade. The stock 79 brakes have tiny vents in the rotors, compared to the huge colling vents in the S4 units.

The custom wide phone dials in the picture have been off the car, in storage since the day after that picture wsa taken (2005). I have since replaced them with 18" factory 997 wheels.
It was getting too difficult finding proper rubber in 16" so I went with a wheel with more rubber choices. Now I can "dumpster dive" when the pro's come to Road America

Mine is 50% road 50% track. It goes to the ring quite a lot but the ring is not that hard on brakes compared to shorter circuits here in the UK. The other consideration is that if I went to S4 calipers I would have to lose the teledial wheels.

The S4 brakes fit under my phone dials. IIRC they needed a very thin spacer to keep the caliper from hitting the face of the wheel.

If you are not experiencing any fade, either you don't really need the upgrade or you are not braking hard enough

use the S brakes on your car.The performance is much better than first generation brakes without the high cost for changing the complete suspension to S4.

Unfortunately (or not) I already have calipers, wishbones, the whole works, even the shock towers sitting on a pallet. Taken from a late Euro S2.

The main thing putting me off is not being able to use phone dial wheels.

The last euro S2 cars have the S4 Brembo brakes.Porsche says no phone dial wheels on that brakes.The early gearboxes and brakes aren´t porschestandard.
Many owners of early 928 change here in germany these parts.

Here in Germany it´s a little bit different.Every car must all 24 month to an technical inspection.TÜV.You can drive the wheels in the list on the paper from your car.

All other wheels must be inspected by an ingenieur from TÜV.Important things are load index,distance to brakes and so on.
Then you drive wrong wheels you have no permission to drive the car on public roads and your insurance is not so happy.

Sometimes people lost driverlicence because the cars are unsafe.Every driver can collect "points" for speeding,redlights,no TÜV and so on.
18 points and you can walk or drive bike.
