Default Late 80's Early 90's 5-Speed wanted!

I am also looking for the rare chance to find a short ratio GT trans if possible? I do have 2 late 70's early 80's 5-speeds that are rebuilt if one of the above is located. 1 has a limited slip. Cheers, J

Just a quick note on Jason's background. His dad is Bud Hart who was largely responsible for building Bob Devores (the d in devek) race car and engine. I first met Jason when he was about 8 while his dad was fixing my 911 transmission. This was probably 25 years ago.
Welcome to the list Jason.

Looks like correct box for GTS.

Since VIN 5145 is one of the last early '93 US GTS which is in essence same as '92 ROW GTS and this one has gearbox number 002238 I think its fairly safe to assume it also has late '92 MY gearbox. This means there were around 250 manual GTS done during '92 MY. Total production was 955 ROW and 88 US models. Only small question mark is that gearbox stamping does not have model year info in it. I would have expected it to be N = '92 MY. Maybe Porsche deleted it in hope that no one would notice they did M718 VIN model year change to these early cars. Anyone have early '93 US which has original 5sp box? What number it has?

I think that Jason's car is one that Bud built for himself after the original Devore car where he did more things to reduce weight and improve overall racing performance. Please do post some photos a lot of time , effort , and creativity have gone into that car.

Do you feel your 2.7x pinion is too short for your torque?

Yes, definitely. I think I would benefit greatly from a 2.2's 1st and 5th gears. I can commence a two-wheel burnout in 1st in a straight line leaving my foot off the clutch completely from 1,500RPM with 275/35-18 tires and the PSD wiggling the rear end trying to hold the power to the ground (this in 9x deg F temps; I found the optimum PSI for the most rear grip at around 25psi). Even if I did have much stickier tires, 1st would top out way too fast. The ideal box for my car IMO would be a GT/GTS box with the stronger internals but with a 2.2 rear pinion. The gear-driven transmission cooler from a GTS would be a bonus too, although not really required. And then I could try going over 200mph

The GTS box's gears are for the (IIRC) thicker main shaft, which is also the pinion. I don't think its possible to do what you imagine, though it seems like a cool idea.

IIRR front end of pinion shaft which goes inside input shaft has larger diameter than other 928 gearboxes. It could be possible to find different size bearings between shafts and make setup work without changing input shaft but this would require non standard size bearings.

I have seen a pic of Jason's 928... That was a small photo from an instamatic camera IIRC. I met Jason at MSR-C about 8 or 9 years ago and that is when I saw the pic. Have been in touch with him off and on ever since.

When this 928 gets finished up it will be one AWESOME vehicle FOR SURE! When he showed me the pic the car looked pretty much stock, but MUCH lower than stock and Jason indicated that all of the custom suspension bits are set up so the car can run 14" slicks all around! YEOW! To do that and still look pretty much stock is UNREAL!

Can't wait to see it live and in person and prefer to see it on track!

Welcome to the group Jason!
