That plastic sleeve was on both the 86 and 86.5 engines I have worked on as well.

Though that nut is normally snugged on there really tight.

I did wipe it down in preparation for Powder Coating. The car has 35K miles and the PO was using Mobile 1 - so they looked pretty clean to begin with.

I've been taking pictures of the whole intake removal process - and fixing a few A/C leaks (O-rings) while I'm in there - and repairing a Power Steering fluid leak - and reseal the water bridge and oil filler neck - and probably replace the TB/WP while I'm in this far - might as well get it all done while I'm in there! I'll probably post a few threads using the pics I'm taking - after I successfully get it all back together!

Can I say that Dwayne's all pervading enthusiasm, persistence and love of these cars has shamed me into the position that I am about to pull the Engine of my 88SE, after putting off the job for about 5 years.

Good on ya Dwayne - I needed some external motivation to overcome my internal Black Dog.

Dwayne,

I have a socket for those nuts. Let me know if you want to borrow it when it's time to put them back together. It's been all over the country a few times! Also, while you have your covers off have you checked your precision valve timing? Might want to if you haven't. Mine was way off.

Thanks for the offer to use the socket, Charles. I have some long nose, 90 degree, needle nose pliers that should do the trick but if I can't work it out, I may take you up on your offer to borrow the socket.

This is my first time taking the S4 intake/cam covers off and TB/WP. Can you tell me what the "precision valve timing" is?? THANKS.

On the 16V cars, the keyway on the cam gears is fixed to the woodruff key.

However, on 32V 928's the cam timing is adjustable - the slot in the cam gear allows for 6/7 degrees variance in the timing. Its not uncommon for cars that have had timing belt jobs done to end up off a tooth, or a few degrees.

There's a tool developed by Porken called the 32v'r which Roger now sells that allows you to check and adjust the timing yourself while your covers are off.

Dwayne,

Check out this link. http://www.928oc.org/928oc_michigan/tbelt.html Go to "Precision Valve Timing" on the drop bar in the middle of the page at the top.

Good luck,
Charles

I did purchase Porken's tool a while back knowing I'd probably need it in the future. Looks like I'll be using it. I'm assuming I can use it to do the "precision valve timing" mentioned above without measuring the valves themselves. Right??

Heading back out into the garage now to continue taking the front of the engine apart. I'm taking lots of pics too.....about 400 so far!

THANKS for the help!
