It's not the paint, it's the prep. Modern paint on a poorly prepped body will look terrible. And it's the skill of the applier. Those Porsche guys in Stuttgart do it all day long on the same vehicles over and over. They know the curves that tend to run, etc. The local guys may or may not. Very rare to see an original Porsche paint job with orange peel, very very common with repaints. I was really surprised how much orange peel was on the 928 that won the wash & shine class at the Santa Barbara Concourse last month. One reason I am delaying a repaint as long as possible, despite all the flaws in my original paint. I don't know that I can afford a paint job I'd be happy with.

When I was looking, one of the requirements was 'original paint'. Well, I got it and it looks great in spots, but will need a respray some time in the future. Of course, if the car is torn down totally and prepped right, no big deal. I should have made that an option when looking, let someone else take that hit.

The person looking at this car is not concerned if the paint is original, just if it is done correctly. He doesn't want to have to repaint anyway.

Has anyone looked at this one yet? Is there anyone in the area that can do a good PPI?

Bronto,

You have that backward... All of my factory original paint cars HAVE orange peel...the repaints have been wet sanded and polished to the point of no orange peel... maybe older factory paints have been waxed/polished/wet sanded enough over the years so they don't show any orange peel, but my '94, '82, and '88 (all factory original cars) have orange peel paint jobs... My '92, '84, and '81 are all repainted and super smooth!

YMMV!

orange peel is just something that happens, but you can correct it with color sanding. I dont mind orange peel because i know i can eliminate it completely.

was the Original factory paint baked at all?

Maybe i need to rethink my stance on new paint

But Sterling, you think your new paint job will last for 20 years?

Knowing you im sure you have Glasurit on the car. But the 2 GT's im interested in, i dont think either seller could tell me what kind of paint was used. You think mid grade paint, not Glasurit, and not the worst is going to stand up to the sun for another 20 years?

I do agree that chemical technology like that of any technology has moved onto bigger and better things. But paints always seem like an iffy thing. Seems to me new paint systems are coming out not cause they are necessarily better, but because they meet ever changing environmental standards.

Still not sure i agree that a full repaint is better than original paint though.....

How do you deal with orange peel when it's under the clear coat?

well, that's what I've been looking at. Mostly OBs like mine with original metallic paint jobs and clear coat. For all the wear and tear, what I usually don't see is orange peel.

Well, some Porsche paints last better than others. Our daily driver 1989 928S4 with Samtrot metallic (Velvet red metallic) paint has lost it's color due to sun fade and the clear coat is coming off. A repaint will be needed for sure, no way that it will buff out. The paint color is rare and I believe a good repaint will not detract from the car. Unless you buy one and never drive it much, all cars will need a repaint somewhere in their lives.

So, at this time as it sits in the garage in pieces going through a transmission change out, oil pan gasket R&R, Porsche motor mounts R&R and the newly designed torque tube bearings and new stronger drive shaft R&R, I am trying to make a decision to paint it or sell it. Would be a great restoration project for someone, but the whole paint job tear down to me is daunting at this time. Too may irons in the fire. Hmmm...
