Default 928 GTS cup alloys ?

I have a chance to buy 4 928GTS cup alloys, and was wondering if anyone could advise if they will fit my MY 1980 928S.

Details of the wheels are-,
Front = 7.5j x 17 ET 65
Rear= 9j x 17 ET 55

Tyres are-,
Front = 225/45/17
Rear = 255/40/17

Currently I have 25mm rear spacers fitted, if the above wheels fit do I get rid of these,.... ie does the GTS rears have spacers already.

Any information as always gratefully received

Forgot to add, some of you may be thinking, why dont I just try them, (wish I could) trouble is they are 300 miles away

The rears will be close to the fender lip, but I have a friend running the old spacer and the 9" et55 rear wheel.

.,so if I remove my 25mm spacers, would there still be a problem with a 9j ?

Just be ready with some smaller slip on spacers, and I think your spacer is 21mm. Get a 17mm set if you have some fender rubbing. The factory lug nuts will still work with 17mm without bottoming out on the stud.
Good choice on a wheel set.

Fronts are dead on perfect, just close to the rear fender with 21mm spacers. That was on my friend's '85 euro here. The fit varies car to car, you will have to see for yourself.
Will look nice and fit well.

Without any rear spacers I don't think they will fit - likely to rub on the insides - anyway you need as much spacer as you can fit without rubbing at the fender lip to get the widest track you can for the best handling benefit.

No need for spacers in front. Back spacers I will go out and measure as I forget what size they are.

Rears should fit fine without spacers - I have 10x18 ET55 on the rear of my GT with 265/35/18 tyres and no rubbing.

They may fit with 17mm spacers but it will be very close and it depends on exactly rear subframe is bolted and how accurately the wheel arches match each other side to side. (Most 928s I have seen the drivers side, RHD, wheel is nearer the arch than the other side.)

They will fit. I had the same set on my 1980, used them for Open Road Racing, no spacers and no problems. If you can get them for a good price, go ahead and get them. Here are some pics...

Couple of things to keep in mind. If you take the spacers off your lugs bolts will probably bottom out on the stud before tightening the wheel to the hub. So you might need those 17mm spacers to make it work w/o getting new studs or lugs.

Second, anyone who actually thinks a wider track on the rear of a 928 makes them handle BETTER has not driven on track much. The early cars are MUCH better balanced than the S4's and GTS's and a large part of that goes to the fact that they have a NARROWER rear track AND non-staggered wheel sizes.

I LOVE the way my race car handles and when the guy finished bringing it to life for me looked at it he said, it is going to oversteer all the time and handle like crap. I told him I'd worry about that and for him to just finish the damn car... Knowing FULL WELL that Mark Anderson had driven the WHEELS off that car and wiped the floor with MANY, MANY 911's with the car set up just the way we were bringing it back to life.

SURE ENOUGH Mark Anderson (and Porsche!) were right, the idiot who only races 911's but did a fine job putting my car back together was WRONG!

Hi Ken,
I remember you commenting on my S4 on pistonheads, where did you get these wheels from? I'm seriously keen on a set just like them...

Seems to me a wider track has to always be basically better - but maybe that is counteracted moreso on a 928 by the effect of the weissach axle with a different offsets and wider rear tires.

I know many racers pin the axle to control excess movements & No I don't spend time on the track... but Porsche themselves did widen tires & track on the GTS...

On the GTS did Porsche change anything wrt the wiessach geometries to compensate for the wider track/wider & staggered tires? Seems like maybe they should have...?

Alan,

No changes to my knowledge, but I can tell you my '81 handles WAY more nicely (maybe not to as high of limits though...I have not tested them like that) than EITHER of the GTS's OR the S4! Seriously it is WAY more neutral and balanced.

I think I noted that you can fix this by changing the factory alignment settings, but if you just leave it stock vs. stock, the early cars *feel* better than the later cars...at least to me. YMMV!
