My dash is getting ready "again" and need to replace the 3 Main pod bulbs. I am trying to choose from the blue or red from http://autolumination.com/194.htm
They are recommending the #194 wedge based bulbs. Do you think the headlamp switch and other switches should be changed if so what bulb should I use? If you were to change any other warning lamps or Hvac etc which ones would you change and what should I use. I think it is over kill to replace them all.
Thanks

Replacing the three main bulbs is not just plug and play. Jager makes a nice conversion kit, which is simple to install. The pod switch bulbs, clock and hvac are the 194's and are plug and play.
Here's what I did ( I went with blue):
- Installed kit from Jager
- Installed pod switch LED's from autolumination -- used diffferent colors (i.e. green for light switch, amber for odo, etc.
- Installed blue havac and clock led from autolumination
Here are a couple of pics:

I would change the Light switch bulb to an LED for reliablity and just change the rest for new fresh bulbs.
For the warning lamps I'd change the Drive (if AT), highbeam, turn signal and 'marker only on' for fresh bulbs and leave the rest (unless any are burned out).
LED's in the main illumination is OK but go with ones that have been proven to have a good wide beam pattern. Color is your choice - personally I'd do white (as in the 'whiter' white).
The biggest issues with LED bulbs are their high cost and different dimming. Most dash bulbs are dimmed by the rheostat they don't dim the same the same as bulbs do and the rheostat won't work the same without the current loading of the bulbs (if you change very many) - a double whammy!.
Of course if you don't care about dimming its mainly just a cost issue.

No disrespect to Jager, but you are paying for instructions on how to install LED's. It is a very cheap and easy thing to do and your options for LED lighting is wide open. I go through this every time when this subject comes up, but just by-pass the dimmer control with LED's. The light is not brighter, but more vivid. I, nor anyone else I have known that has installed LED's felt the need to dim them.
Please refer to my write up on LED's. The only thing that I need to add is that within that thread, I did not note that the cluster LED's can be ordered with the twist in base.

Did you check out Speedhut? They have some super cool reverse glow dials.

About a year ago when Jager came out with their LED dash light kit I bought one. I choose
the red LED's since my car has burgundy interior. This is a monster job removing the cluster
just for this purpose. There are 3 mirror coated acrylic reflectors that you remove and then
you put in the mini LED light/wire harness assemblies. My old acrylic mirrors were very
dull and I was anticipating seeing a vast improvement. Before I installed them I made sure
all the bulbs worked and the polarity was correct. Remember, this is a big job. I put everything
back together and waited for nighttime. When I came out and saw the lights I was very disappointed.
I could hardly tell they were on. The dimmer switch was all the way up. I then bypassed the dimmer
switch and it still was no better. I then emailed Jager and told them what happened. They said sorry we
had a bad design and will send me out the new and improved version right away. They did and I swapped
it out. Not much better but I kept it. I think the white or blue would be a better choice. My needle on my temp
gauge just fell off so I need to go back in there again. I'm thinking about the Speedhut option.

I finally installed the Cool White LEDs in the gauges and hvac of my '87 S4. I got them from Nicole. It is really nice, just make sure you put them in positive to positive as per the instructions on the gauge LEDs. The instructions aren't specific for the hvac, so plug in the hvac head and test the LED before you close it all back up. If it doesn't work just flip the LED bulb around in the socket. Then install the casing back on the hvac and put in back in the console.
They are 100% brighter than the stock bulbs, but as Alan said, they will only dim a little with the rheostat.
Also, these LEDs from Nicole are specially made for the 928 and not available just anywhere. They are made to replace the 3 mirror prisms in the bottom of the gauge pod. If you just install standard LED bulbs into the sockets, you may not get the full brightness due to the faded reflective coatings of the old mirror prisms. Mine were faded badly.
The other LEDs behind the switches are probably general fitment, but I didn't replace those.
The new owner is picking up the car tomorrow, so he'll enjoy nice bright gauges.

I've installed a dozen or so Jager LED kits over the last couple years. I've tried several DIY kits but I think the Jager kit is the best one for ease of install and convenience.
The Jager kit includes 3 new lenses, leds, wiring and instructions.
I also found an LED dimer that is a bit expensive, but works fine. It requires some wire cutting and splicing and will mount under the pod by drilling one small hole in the plastic trim piece.

IIRC, Speedhut is the one that started doing this for 928's a few years back, when several of us bought them for our 928's. There was a minimal order issue in order to entice Speedhut to make them for 928's. A group buy thing here, started it all for 928's. I've never had a problem with mine, although, IIRC, there was some alignment issue on some models.
And we paid a lot more than what they are selling for now.....

I went to Discount Auto today and thought I would give this a shot. It is an 9-Led strip, I removed the reflectors and placed the strip under the opening. The dash lights up great I used the red Led's. The picture does not show the color or intensity. The total cost $24.00 and included 2-strips, works for me.
