Default Not Good - AT 1988 (transmission - rv)

Okay, I bought a used AT(with LSD) 928 with 130,000 miles that I knew had issues with the transmission. I knew I needed to pull the transmission anyway due to a leak above the torque converter. But when I drive the car, with transmission fluid added and full, the trans slips from 1st to 2nd pretty good. I don't like messing with the transmission but I have the tools and I am fairly sure that I can follow the step by step instructions on here for rebuilding the transmission. However, I have never done tranmission work, engine work yes but transmission not so much. Also, can this be done without a lift? I got a two car garage that can be used to house the car and enough room for me to work in. Just a little nervous about tearing into something like this for the first time. I will be replacing the TQ converter bearings, TT Tube and bearings, and the main seal at the same time as the rebuild. Is there anything else that I should consider replacing at the same time?

Or should I just get a rebuilt transmission? Have it repaired at a shop?

Whats a good way to tell the wife that she can park in the garage for the winter due to tearing apart a car I just bought? Oh and by the way honey, I have never done this before!

You might want to start with a fluid and filter change, and while you are in there upgrade the spring responsible for the 2-3 flare shift (which is what this sounds like). Are you sure it is a 1-2 slip? If this solves the problem you can just focus on fixing the leaks.

As far as telling the wife to park outside for the winter. Let me know how that goes.

Sorry forgot to mention that I changed the fluid and the filter after I got the car. The slipping occurs wither between 1-2 under hard acceleration or from 2-3. I will look into changing the spring as well.

Actually the more I think about this, it is from 2-3. Because it goes to shift and the revs go up and then it eventually goes into gear. As I drive, losing fluid (even on short trips), then the shift gets worse and worse and it can even get bad enough to where it doesn't shift at all. I assume this to be due to the loss of fluid.

Is is slipping or just very slow to engage?

It is slipping, very similar to a clutch going out on a manual.

Personally, I would pay to swap in a rebuilt unit from 928 Int'l. I believe it's $2500 with a waranty.

I just did a rebuild of my auto over the summer. It was not too bad actually. Borland has also done it here on Rennlist and I also got a few pointers from Steve Cattaneo. The WSM on the 4 speed is very good compared to other things that are vague. I also rebuilt my TT. Steve recommends a rebuild kit from Transtar. There was a local warehouse her in St. Louis, so I lucked out. I think Mercedes has a kit that Borland used. I would NOT try to buy all the O-rings, gaskets, clutches, etc piece by piece. You will go broke. i think the Transtar kit was about $250 or so. It was listed for a particular Mercedes that used the same tranny as us. I have the P/N that I got from Steve if you go this way. It would also be a good time to have your stall increased on your torque converter. I got mine done locally pretty cheap. Do not hesitate to PM me if you have questions.

I’m almost in the same boat. My AT isn’t working right and I haven’t decided what to do yet. I like the Steve Cataneo rebuild or 928 Intl rebuild ideas, but I’m guessing freight is going to add a lot to the cost.

Locally, I think Jeff Bradley on Shadeland is about the best transmission guy in town, but I haven’t talked to him about the 928. Terry Heath at Euro motorsports knows a lot about 928’s. He has or at least used to have two himself and not sure if he touches x-missions. He is usually very expensive; however, I got an email from him recently basically begging for work and offering a 20% discount.

If you decide to do it on stands in your garage, please let me know if you would like some help. I have both the paper and CD versions of the WSM plus tons of pictures and strings I’ve downloaded off of here. I’ve never done this before, but I’d be willing to help out just to get the experience.

If I'm not mistaken, the transmission and differential are two separate units bolted together. Therefore, you can replace the transmission and retain your LSD.

For anyone interested, I will have a high-stall (modified by Edge Racing Converters) converter for sale shortly.

BD has this TC been in service??
Did it cause any unwanted vibrations?
Others here have had problems with vibration after swapping in the reworked TCs

What do you want for the TC $$.??

I haven't had any problems with any vibrations. Steve Pappin (who has since sold his 928) had his refinned by Edge, as has Rob R (928ss), each of whom had very good things to say about Andre's work.

I'd like to get $250 for it. (and sorry for the thread hijack)
