Default Unusual dying problem

My 86' US 928 dies out, but only "just" after a fill up, which usually happens after the fuel light comes on. The other time it likes to die out is when the orange fuel light just comes on.

This year, when I fill up I only put in 6-10 gallons. With the price at $4 a gallon, and now rapidly falling, it wasn't worth filling it all the way up! The price is $2.85 here now.

After it initially dies out from the fill up, the car seems just fine. When it dies out it happens within a one second timeframe from beginning (running) to finish (dead). Not sure if that sounds like a fuel related dying problem or not.

At first I thought it was the ignition switch or a relay, but as the problem got more scenario specific, now I doubt it. It generally will start back up and run again with no problem.

Any ideas? I am thinking a weak fuel pump sender relay or something fuel tank related.

My last issue with sudden dying had no particular rhyme or reason, and after a bit of prodding and poking, it would start back up and run fine. It was the fuel pump relay. I've had two issues intermittent odd behavior, and both were relays. I highly recommend new ones for the EFI and fuel pump.

Thanks Chris. Were they generic bosch relays or did you get VW equivelants?

I switched the ignition, FI and fuel pump relays. Went out for a 3 mile ride, ran great, seemed like it ran stronger, started earlier, idle stabilized sooner.

I guess we'll see when the conditions are repeated if the problem goes away.

So replacing these components solved the problem? Currently my '82 5 sp suffers from the same problem occasionaly. It always cranks over instantly except for ever once in a while when I get gas. The car will crank over, run for about 1 seccond, then stall. I turn the key again and it then runs fine. I'll swap out a fuel pump relay from one of our other cars I'll post back with the results.

What's unusual about this? It seems like everybody's 928 just dies for no reason...

Moral of the story- replace old relays before they act up, and make sure you use the correct ones.

I did replace all the relays and that did not help. Well, I am sure it helped me not get stranded somewhere in the near future. What has seemed to help is spraying with electronics cleaner spray, the underhood wiring harness connector thingie next to the postive battery block. I gotta go find a piece of wood to knock on! Oh wait, the steering rack is leaking now, so I won't be bored....Whew!!!
