Money is no object? I'd just have Porsche build me a replica. But updated and better. And supercharged, of course.

Oh yeah, right, Porsche already did that. (Not sure about the supercharging part, though. )

That's not bad looking at all. Wonder how old it will have to get before we can afford one?

There's two schools of thought here on the "money no object" school of 928 engine work.

Either you pour silly money into the 928 motor, getting yourself into some kind of stroked, bored, lightened, high rev, possibly boosted variant of what started in the car....

or, you punt on the entire drivetrain, and basically go get something from Nascar or F1, or whatever else you dream of, and build a 928-looking body around it

Me? I wanted a bone-stock seeming 928 with a "little extra" hiding inside which will be 6.5 liters of Greg Brown internal goodness.

You guys are too used to American engines.

How about this. Custom flat-plane SHORT STROKE crank, titanium rods, short-skirted titanium pistons, custom heads with pneumatic valves, ITB, carbon-fiber direct-injection intake, 7-plate F1-style clutch leading to a carbon-fiber driveshaft and a lightweight, sequential gearbox. Rev that sucker to twelve grand and see what kind of power you can make!

My original qualifications were it had to be a 928 engine and was for a street/show car.

- '87 S4 squirter block with thickest possible cylinder walls, deck plate and some other mods to it
- 8 counterweight gun drilled 3.75" stroker crank
- custom titanium rods
- custom Mahle 104mm low CR Alusil pistons
- ported 968 heads with custom exhaust valves
- custom cams for boosted application and 968 Variocam setup
- individual throttle body intake
- twin turbo setup with as large as possible turbos and IC's
- 3.5" headers and custom exhaust
- Motec fuel management
- modified twin disk clutch
- custom TT centershaft
- 6sp manual gearbox conversion
- heavy duty custom drive shafts

Usable 1200 hp would be doable with enough time and $40-50k I think. Price includes decent condition S4 which has suffered something like thrust bearing or timing belt failure.

totally unnecessary unless you're in the 7000hp plus nitro crowd......

in that case, stock 928 32V with twin turbo's feeding a twin screw----with lots of powdercoat and chrome plating.....

Sorry---wrong approach. No torque/high rev/heavy car doesn't get it. Sure it'll run 300mph---if you ever get it to move---but you'll never use what it has (on the street, road course, drag strip, etc......) Remember, you're dealing with a 3400 pound car with very tall gears......not a 1500 pound F1 car----

next......
