Mark,
The car I posted was just an example of how extreme these conversations can go.
Also, IIRC that car is not a turbo, and the driver does not have the use of his legs (notice no pedals). I'm not sure how that might change his driving class.
If you really want to go off the deep end, look up the lap times of the GTO class RX-7's. Very similar to the one I posted above with a lot more power.

RX7's can be made into good track cars......all it takes is $$$$ just like any other track machine......
the trick is to find a platform that gives great times with minimal $$$$ This is where the 928 shines.....granted Anderson is far from a budget machine, the stroker alone is probably $30k...but I doubt you could find a track machine that costs less that could match or beat his times (limited to non tube frame cars, real production frames only)...... Afterall he can beat the custom twin turbo GT3's with over 800hp that cost nearly $400k

Jean-Louis runs Road America with a stock EuroS CIS motor (pre-supercharger) as fast as slightly modified ZO6 Corvette's.

If you hang around the race tracks long enough, you see some extreme machines. my favorite is shown below. (1000hp)
Yes, that pic you posted is GT3 class , SCCA . Its tons of money, but not as fast as a car like anderson/Fan's. But again, its hardly the manufacturer at that point, when you tube frame it and then put a fake body back on

I have had 5 and two were 86-87 Turbo's. I had the 87 when i had just bought the 928, they are closer than you think. In town the '7 was nimble and quick wheras on 928 could not stretch its long legs and never got a chance to get wound up. On the highway anything past 70 the 928 was faster.

It's interesting to see how many 928 owners have had RX-7s. I was lucky enough to end up driving my dad's RX-7 (it went from his daily driver to a back-up car) a lot when I was in high school--it's the fun I had in that car that started me towards wanting a 928. I have to say, the RX-7 (stock '83) was so light and quick and handling was outstanding. If I had a bigger garage I'd have one just for fun; that said, the fun ended in third gear--once you shifted to fourth it was strictly cruising from there...

My dad had one too. I used to love hearing that redline buzzer go off
Its pretty funny that one of my competitors is driving one and is not that far behind. I dont know how expensive that race engine is, but the rest of the chassis is pretty standard cheap racer stuff. 1:39.8 at laguna seca on 14" rims and ballon DOT hoosiers. 200rwhp and 1800lbs. Its just a flying tin can.
