Default 18 pin diagnostic connector install in '88

I want to install the later diagnostic connector in my '88 so I don't have to keep yanking the brain area to put the hammer on it. I'm sure it is possible, and I know where to get the parts.

Has anyone done it? If so, advice?

Would it not just be easier to extend the wiring of the existing connector and move it to later position. Find a bunch of coloured wires, snip the existing wires one by one and solder in an extension piece. Heat shrink the connections job done.
