Default Blown headgaskets? Nope -- bad cylinder

Well, we knew it was coming, just not when. Murphy dictates that part, and it's always at the worst possible moment. At the beginning of the summer, Kevin slapped the supercharger system on his new 85 Euro so we could have a little fun with the car this year, and to be sure that the supercharger system would actually work on the 85 Euro before going whole hog on the job. And put together with basically junk, it made it almost all the way to the end of the season, but sadly, just as the first guest arrived yesterday for our little fun drive, Kevin took his baby out for a quick test ride to be sure all was in order. 87 944 C was with him. It was like shades of the old days with Pandora...

He hit the highway, and it wasn't feeling right, next thing there's smoke pouring out of the auto shifter console, and he looks out the rear view to a cloud of thick white smoke obscuring the two lanes of traffic behind him.

Limps it home, pouring smoke and dripping oil from every surface.....

This morning, he did a compression check and had 155 lbs across the board, except for #8, which was only holding 80 lbs.

The he started taking it apart and confirmed what he already knew....it was blown headgaskets. Milk shake oil everywhere.

Fortunately, at this point it doesn't look like any piston or valve damage. We're crossing our fingers. Double fortunately, we looked ahead when we bought the car, and purchased a full engine gasket set at the same time. So it's just a matter of doing the work now.

But look at the neat way he started the disassembly today. Shaved quite a chunk of time off the job doing it this way:

More pics of the job tomorrow...this car will be back on the road by the end of the week, thank goodness for small favors!

That offer is very much appreciated, Ed. As of now everything looks good....but if there's a crack in there somewhere, welll, you just might be hearing from us.

We're not any of us going to be able to do the Arrwin run. I just read about 2 hours ago that his run is closed because he has too many people already.

Are you already on his list? I didn't check...I know we're not, so we're out. Maybe we could just follow along for the drive or something. See what ideas we can get for another run next year..... Then split off when they reach their destination and do something else....

Got some other ideas based around the Wallpack area too...have to look at some maps. And there's Tony's idea of going to the old plane museum up near Kingston....

So many cool things to do, so little time. We'd really like to make it back to Island Dragway one more time too, before the season is completely over. Maybe one of those Friday night grudge races? That would be so much fun.

Sigh....

*day dreaming*

Ah, don't mind Brendan, Ed. He has an addiction for taking things apart, we've heard...

The real trick is getting stuff put back together in the right order so it works again.

Brendan, as you may know, Kevin's a guy of few words, and with a love for eliminating unnecessary labor that will allow him to get the car back on the road ASAP.

The engine is on its original head gaskets, after sitting ten years, yes....and with 10 lbs, maybe a little more, of boost it was really bound to happen. But there's no evidence that there is anything wrong further down, so no need to crack that can of worms open just yet. The engine still looks like new inside, from what has been revealed so far.

And there's another engine sitting at the back of the garage under a shelf, if the worst happens.

Doing it this way allows the car to be back on the road in under a week, but of course, if a need is revealed after further disassembly (your favorite word, Brendan ), it will definitely get pulled.

Otherwise, look for reports that it's back, and badder than ever, this weekend. With a little extra added boost...

It's just head gaskets, and every other gasket in the engine, sidehatch. No big deal.

It's almost 25 years old now...it's time.

I was referring to Arrwin's list for Sunday's ride to the race track.
