I have worked as an art director for years and my experience has been to ALWAYS have someone not involved in a project proof/inspect it.

I've done a couple for others and I'm sure I could do one for myself.

But then again, the 2nd set of eyes would be nice, esp if I let the emotional "I got to have this car" get in the way.

Good point - that just killed the reason to bring a friend along.

I feel confident enough to do the PPI but agree a restraint maybe needed to stop the impulse........my wife does a very good job.

I would. Take all the emotions out of it and only look at it as a car, nothing more.

Have been buying cars since high school that were pretty much ready for the junkyard and have been bringing them back to life. The only thing that I stick to it is, that if in doubt, walk away from it.

If you don’t know much about cars, leave the PPI to someone that does.

I'm with Erik on the idea of having an extra set of 928-skilled eyes along. I'm pretty sure I could fill out the list if things in the paper PPI forms, all the way through the mechanical. I'm pretty good at the cosmetic stuff too, and have a good idae what I want the car to look like when I'm done.

I've done a few PPI's for others. One was SteveG's GTS when it was offered for sale here in Cali and needed to go to him in Long Island. That was a cosmetic inspect, basic visual on mechanicals, drive test. It was supposed to be the initial pass-fail 'filter' before getting deeper into it. The car is nice enough and the history good enough that he scooped it up on that inspection only.

I did another simple inspection on a very low mile and well-stored black/black '89 GT that was mentioned here by Todd (Low Miler) sitting on a lot nearby, but represented as a 5sp S4. I confirmed the numbers as GT, and thought about going back and getting it. Snooze you lose, Bob. It was gone in a day. A great deal for someone. I don't 'need' another 928, although that one was way sweet... after the requisite $5k in parts to get all the critical old stuff made new again. In this case, a buddy along with me would have kick-started the buying process for me I suspect.

There are various reasons for bringing a knowledgeable friend along.

I did my own when I bought mine. I looked at the car and then went back a second time to inspect. I learned from my many mistakes buying beater (moneypits) Fiats and Alfas that I need to try to remove my enthusiasm and take a hard look before I spend any money. My wife is the opposite. She wanted to buy the Shark the first time she saw it...

I have done my own PPI, but have always, no matter, what service records. Planned on replacing a bunch of parts and spending, a good deal of money. To bring the car up to a decent standard. It's my 3rd 928 and have learned alot about what will need attention, over the last 11 years.

Yes I can but the "enthusovision" needs to be curbed.

Edit

Sorry Sharkskin I seem to be spoiling your attempt to have the last post on all topics on the first page
That's not what I was trying to do -- I guess I just made a bunch of posts in quick succession when the board was otherwise a bit slow. Thanks for breaking it up a bit.

Can and do. I've bought and sold 30+ cars and look for different levels depending on what I'm after, and I can't say as I've ever been burned, even buying three cars over the internet sight-unseen until I flew out on a one-way ticket. I could have refused those, but I had a ton of information before I got on the plane.

Service records are critical if I'm going for a nice car and I would not buy one without them. But if I want something to play with or a project, then records don't mean much. I've paid for a PPI exactly twice and I will admit they were good. One prevented me from buying a 930 that hid a couple serious problems and another landed my 911SC that I sorely wish I still had, what a fantastic car that was.
