928 GTS question
#16
Cobalt,
Obviously, you've seen the GTS in question. First, it's an auto; otherwise, I'd have considered buying it. Second, I'm not sure why you think it would cost 12-15 k to restore it. As I stated, I've heard the issues with Todd, and will agree that he was out of control. Aside from that, I've never heard any of his cars bounce back with any issues. The one issue I heard about, the buyer clearly stated that Todd was willing to rectify the problem to his satisfaction. Let's be honest, looking at the pics of the Zermatt Silver car, on ebay, most people wouldn't have disclosed any paint issues at all. Todd seems pretty transparent.
I'm not really sure how I got involved in a dog pile-on here. I was trying to pass along information - one can take it for what it's worth. Todd's got his detractors for sure. If someone wants to check him out, great. If not, no skin off of my back. I have no affiliation with him. As I said, I wouldn't hesistate to buy one from him if the price was right.
1993 Zermatt Silver 928 GTS
Addendum - I hadn't looked at the post in a while - the car's sold anyway.

Zematt is a great color and as we have all learned from our valve covers and intakes or cooling fans on 911's the color changes drastically over time. I have also known this color to be an issue on other models and eventually the problem had spread to the entire car. Matching this color would be nearly impossible and knowing the issues with sections of the car i would not trust the rest of the paint to hold up even if it could be blended properly. In a case like this IMO the only correct repair is a complete repaint, stripped, windows removed and properly painted. There might be parts of the country that will do a decent job for a few thousand, around me I couldn't find a competent shop that I would trust to do this car justice for under $12k, but I like my cars too look perfect, even my track car is in better shape than most garage queens.
The problem with rare colors is matching them. I have a section of the three parts of my rear bumper on my turbo that every shop except for 3 said they would not be able to match properly. Of those that guarantee they can they want $1800 just to repaint a small 150 sq inches of bumper without having to blend in all over the rest of the car. So I guess it all depends on how crazy you want to go, but being a concours veteran and judge I am sure a basic paint job would be picked up easily with this color.
If you just want a DD and aren't so concerned about resale and paint this was a hell of a bargain, but this car would never be sold by Willhoit or anyone trying to obtain top $$ for a rare clean car.

Cobalt,
A very fair and thorough answer. As you say, I would have looked at it as a DD and wouldn't show it.
As I said, maybe Todd's not for everyone. He wasn't even for me this time.Just nice to have someone like him (and Wilhoit) available to 928 lovers.

In so many words already stated, Todd dug his own hole. I have long forgotten his antics, but remember the bad taste left in my mouth...as well as others. Kudos to him for cleaning up his act. As for cars he has represented....or should I say MIS represented. No, I cannot give you specifics because after the first few "big fish" posts he made, I disregarded anything he said. If you do a search, I am sure you can come up with posts by him MIS representing a car or two...or more.
If you think by calling him a bozo is trashing him...then so be it. I am merely giving my opinion of what I had known. Again, all the best to him if he is a stand up guy and has rectified his relationships.

Keith,
It sounds like he has done well in the act clean up dept. I didn't know any of this other stuff and only started conversing with him recently and like everyone else here who has talked to him lately find him to be very up front and honest!
Like I said, were it not for Blue82 I would be the new owner of the Zermatt93! Maybe some day...I am going to keep up w/ the new owner in case he decides to part with it in a few years! *fingers crossed*
Be cool guys and keep the 928 Faith! The GTS is one AWESOME CAR and if you can afford one, do yourself a favor and buy one! They are AMAZING! If you can't afford a GTS then get a nice '89, then '88 or '87 S4 and enjoy 95% of the GTS for about half the price!

IMO the paint job needed on Todd's car by me would cost between $12-15k to have done correctly...
This is not possible, unless (a) you're paying for them to paint it 3 times, or (b) they are painting it with solid gold.
I've seen cars go from barnyard to concours for $9k. Unless it needed extensive body work on all panels before (and including) paint, $12 to $15k is highway robbery.

Todd will readily admit he was amidst the toughest time of his life, almost lost his family over the issues he was having. He went out of his way to make things right with several people especially his family. I worried when I saw the post about RV on Pelican last week that he was regressing. Was glad to see he took the high road b/f things got out of hand. His written style is verbose in all he posts and 928 ads. That's just his style. Hell, the ads he writes make me want some of his cars and some of them make me roll my eyes.... I would have no problem buying something from him b/c I know in spite of his writing style I know it's probably a pretty nice car.
