Starting today Oct. 1st, Massachusetts will no longer require any vehicle built before 1996 to have emission testing as part of the yearly inspection.
Up till now I believe it was 1983 and newer had to pass emissions.
Lots of happy people today!!

Woo Hoo!
I guess MA is only checking emissions for OBDII and newer cars now and this will only involve plugging in to the connector.
No more nervous visits to the local inspection garage wondering if they'll mess up the car on the dyno.

Got mine inspected on Monday, 1st time with the x-pipe/high flow cats. I was surprised how fast it passed, and how well it did w/o the air pump.

Even if you only drive 1,000 miles per year (without a CAT), the amount of obnoxious fumes you will spew into the air is equivalent to a modern green car traveling over 75,000 miles!!!!
/7 cars in the garage, only two have CATS....

The state may not be checking your emissions, but taking off your cats is still against the law and the EPA can fine you. Just saying..not that don't have cars that have "test" pipes on em..

Sean, what is year here in TX. Mine passed easy last year, but would love to do ypipe and straight out the back with something.
Im guesing my 84 is borderline? Maybe in January I could have it inspected with no cats and be ok. For cars that old assume they will just do a safety inspection here in TX?
Will PM you with same question.

that sucks
This proved to be a hassle i wasnt expecting when i bought a car from san antonio.
In the end it didnt cost a whole lot to get it to pass smog, but why remove the cats? Just leave them on, save teh environment. Its not like removing cats gives you a billion horsepower!
Also if you remove cats you have to pay for replacement pipe, so that costs money, so save your cats the earth will thank you for it. There is little to be gained by just removing them, so just keep em there.......
