They're OK on a dark coloured car, especially the GTS with the shorter strips.

They do break up the flowing lines of the older bodies in light colors.

I chose to have them reinstalled after some body work for the protection they provide.

First pic is without, second is with.

Completely disagree. They're worse in person.

Let's see, we have this beautiful organic design, flowing, curving, smooth, very pleasing to the eye form.

Oh hey, I've got an idea, lets put a perfectly straight line in the form of a body side molding right down the side. Yeah, that's the ticket.

What a crime.

All right fess up..who voted yes?
Is Carl the guy from our area? I met him at the Park Place thing in '07. His 86.5 IS my dream 928, and yes, no side moldings, no sunroof, white on black, 5 sp. Not sure on the LSD, but that's not a deal breaker.

He told me he searched for ever for that one.

I tried the old, call me when you're ready to sell and we'll work something out, he wouldn't even take my number. Waah.

I really dislike the strips. It makes the car look pedestrian.

The poll should really be

Yes - protects against car park dings
no destroys original lines

Daily driver - Yes invaluable
garage queen - No looks much better without.

Even on my daily driver, I would rather make the effort to park "away" from folks...or even deal with the dent removal guy on a yearly basis than have the strips

The rub strips mess with the curves, and the horizontal stripe makes the car look (even) fatter.

You be the judge:

That is close to the holy grail of '86.5s. I would spec the following, too.

With M:
220 - LSD
251 - 2.53 diff
409 - sport seats
474 - sport shocks
470 - spoilers delete
018 - elevated hub SW
139 - left heated seat
340 - right heated seat
335 - rear 3-point seat belts

Without M:
570 - rear air
650 - sunroof
418 - side moldings

I think it depends on the car...it's color and and wheels for starters. My GTS has the side moldings and I prefer them. My black 85 has them and as much as I don't like them on most cars, they look fine to me. My old 82 didn't have them and that looked great. It's all subjective I guess, so I won't vote...so there!

I do agree though Tom, the OB's are rounder looking and the side moldings tend to clash as they are just plain straight and angular.

I don't buy the arguement that the moldings protect the 928 doors. Too many variables on car door heights relative to each other, too many tall SUV's, too many shapes of door edges, etc.

I always park in spaces far away, or, in very large spaces where the possibility of hits is minimal.

And I don't believe the body side moldings were part of the original body style design.

But, too each his own.

The car looks much cleaner and classic without the side moldings. When I repaint sometime in the future I'm going to take them off.

The side mouldings take away from the subtle curves and make the car seem a bit slab sided. Pity the side moulding delete option is such a rarity.
here ya go....

My car is the same color as yours..and when it goes for a respray the moldings will come off as will the lower skirts and marker lights
