The engine speed sensor is on the bell housing aft of the engine. There probably a check for the sensor in the WSM or tech manuals..............let me look.

I whack the pod when my car does that. Works almost every time.

If the cruise control works fine, does it means that the engine speed sensor is OK ?

Another question

If the speed sensor was bad, will the car start? I always thought that the car will not run if it was bad.

speed sensor MPH and engine RPM sensor are different parts in different places,
MPH in the rear side of the trans.
RPM in the aft edge of the engine block under the air cleaner

What was the last thing you fixed??

None. The RPM just quit.

I did look at the cluster - clean it .
Then I checked the RPM sensor - under the air box - Looks good with good ohm reading (around 1K ohm)

Car runs OK - there is some hesitation at 3/4 or full throttle once in a while. Need to check the distributor caps and rotors.

Luc.......do a search........the tach signal goes to one of the brains and back to the tachometer........you may need a scope to determine where the signal is going bad.

check the throttle position switch through the brain wires it might not be giving the WOT signal,
for the Tach Also check the CE panel for a possibly disconnected wire you will need the WSM to figure out the correct wires to test
