The seller misrepresented the car plain and simple. He was lucky enough to find a novice used car buyer that didn't know any better.
I would put this seller on my list of places not to do business with after reading that email. 20 year old cars can look very very good if cared for. Rock chips can be expected but chin spoilers which are falling off is not IMHO indicative of wear/age.

The car looks alot like mine did when it rolled off the truck from an unscrupulous seller (mine actually looked worse). I remember my heart sank. But, a few grand (well more than a few) later, it's looking good and ready to roll across the USA this weekend. I paid less for a newer one, and had a ppi with a dishonest guy tied to the seller. Anyway, this one doesn't look that bad to me. Overpriced? yeah, a bit. How are the mechanics? Does it run well? Those are the real questions.

I think we have all made that mistake once or twice. Still the seller stated one thing and sold another.
My biggest pet pieve is a dishonest salesman, they just don't deserve to be successful and I wish them the same grief they cause for their customers. They also make it difficult for the honest salespeople by leaving their customers jaded.

I bought my '84 for $6700 or something like that... Very respectable car. Needs the dash completely recovered, but the paint it pretty damn good (it was repainted at a Mercury dealer IIRC back in '92) and it starts everytime I turn the key and the A/C works quite well. Chin spoiler was good but failing when I got the car and after I realized it was drooping more I paid about $100 to have that fixed. It is 24 years old and is for sure not as bad as that car!
