honestly.......
sounds like a really picky buyer on a real cheap budget. I have to agree that a 20 year old car will look like a 20 year old car. Its insane what some people expect. I dont know all the details but i dont see a whole lot to get upset about, it looks like a 20 year old car. Not sure what he paid but if he paid $10,000 he should be happy

Without seeing how the car was initially advertised, it's impossible to draw a conclusion. It's down to "he said - she said".
There are several great PPI checklists available here on Rennlist, through gracious owners. Even so, a checklist is no substitute for careful inspection. There are too many subjective concerns when buying 'interesting' cars to leave it all to a checklist. We often see where a car is represented as '8 out of 10' on paint. Is '10' the way it was delivered from the factory, or what one might 'subjectively' expect to see on a 20 year old car stored outside its whole life? Are chips and dents normal in a car this age? Both are fixable, but where do they fit in the 'x out of 10' scale? 'Clean' is similarly subjective, as applied to any part of the car. Garage queen, driver, weekends, shows, schlepping bags of manure for the garden? Never shows up on a PPI checklist.
Have a knowledgeble 928 owner/enthusiast do an initial PPI for you, with lots of pictures, before you invest in a mechanical PPI. I have no reason to believe that you'll get a good mechanical PPI from a dealer. The list shown says nothing about the condition of the mechanicals, beyond that it will possibly need certain things attended to. TB "looks OK" is just what I need to know when making a purchase decision.
All that said, these are still mostly "used cars" when they are sold. There are certainly some exceptional examples around, but they get passed from loving owner to appreciative buyer relatively quietly and honestly. I know several folks who have great experience buying exceptional cars from dealers, but they are far from typical. A used car dealer is inclined to build up a car's condition and history a bit when they sell it, and there's generally no way to confirm that anything they say is valid or not, beyond what you see. "Buyer Beware" applies to all used purchases, especially from used car dealers.
Now, ehere was "sympathy" in the dictionary?

I'm glad I've never sold a car to that guy. He seems like an ***.
I had a similar situation when I sold a 1991 Audi V8q to a guy in Oklahoma. He bought the car after a 5 minute test drive and then took it from Chicago back to OKC without issue. A week later he calls me up fuming mad that the AC has stopped working and the car is undrivable for his wife because it's just too hot outside. He was mad because he thought it was a reliable car. I'm not sure what part of owning one of the most obscure Audi cars ever made, that was 13 years old, and had 250,000 miles on it made him think it would be a turn key daily driver for his wife. We agreed to disagree and haven't spoken since.
Pretty much why I own 7 cars now. I hate dealing with people when it comes to selling stuff...

I know someone that paid a premium for a PPI at a dealership and when the car arrived it didn't start. Once he charged the battery and started it, it sounded so bad he instantly shut it down, pulled the dip stick which was bone dry.
Moral; Don't have just annyone do a ppi.

I also had similar bad experience selling a car to someone sight unseen (an old Camaro). The car was almost 30 years old and the new owner expected it to be perfect (although I didn't represent it as so). After shipping it about 800 miles, the owner was unhappy. My sitiation, too, was about unrealistic expectations. Finally I told the guy you didn't pay a show quaity price, how can you expect a show quality car. Out of the goodness of my heart, I sent him a few hundred bucks to fix a few of the issues he claimed. After that, I told myself I will not sell a car sight unseen to anyone. I felt bad, he was pissed; no one was happy.

I don't know how it was advertised, but from the pics it looks like it's definitely not a pristine example. If everything works it looks like a 6k car max, probably due to the buyer trying to highlight the bad points. I mean, a stitched-up front spoiler? Seems small, but it's indicative of the care the car has received. If I pay ten grand for an early 928 that spoiler had better be perfect, hell the whole car had better be really excellent. Maybe not concours-clean underneath but it should be nice.

I saw that, but there had to be something more represented to the buyer as part of the sale. If the buyer was going solely on the ad copy, shame on him for not getting more info prior to purchase.
Of course, the thread is about getting a good PPI, with this sale used only as an example. It was the need for a quaility PPI we were discussing, right?

The picture are not bad.
Some rubber, vinyl and leather got some crack. It's to expect from a 22 years car.
However, no pict of his pod and dash. I guess it has no crack! Which is kinda rare.
(Nevermind, he got the pod middle crack! Who don't?)
22 years old car :
- Change ALL fluid
- Change any cracked boot
- Change all sparks plug
- Change all belts
- Change all filter
That's the basic...
After you look at harness, alternator, radiator, pumps.
5000k of repair? I kind doubt that. I mean, rebuilding a whole transmition cost much less than that.
It looks nice. Maybe 10K is a bit, but if I had to sell it, I wouldn't go under 7-8K.

from the ebay ad:
The body is perfect on this vehicle, not a single dent, ont even a door ding.
from customer support:
I apologize you do not think this car arrived in the same shape it left. All cars this age have scratches, dings, dents. I apologize you thought you were getting a brand new carfor 10k , as they were 100k new.
ebay ad:
The interior is beautiful, like new
cust sup:
Again Dave, the cracks in the dash are normal for a car this age.
draw your own conclusions

The seller misrepresented the car plain and simple. He was lucky enough to find a novice used car buyer that didn't know any better.
I would put this seller on my list of places not to do business with after reading that email. 20 year old cars can look very very good if cared for. Rock chips can be expected but chin spoilers which are falling off is not IMHO indicative of wear/age.
