Default Won't go into 2nd, but all other gears perfect (fixed!)

Its a new failure mode for me. I have never heard of it, nor have I felt this before. It may be user error. Probably is.

Early 5spd. Rebuilt (well, new synchros and reverse was replaced) by Devek (2 years ago or more) -

Shifts pretty tight. NOT grinding - but almost like it needs to be broken in more, as if it wasn't driven.

This may be related, but I checked the rear linkage to see if what I did loosened it: I put a short shifter in. Makes a world of different btw.

So I was shifting from 3 down to 2 getting off the highway, and it kind of kicked back at my hand. After that, there was no more 2nd. All other gears work great.

Any ideas? It doesn't go in. It hits a "wall" which I assyme is the selector ring not even getting a chance - as if the shifter rod is being kept out of that area - maybe the detent pin popped infront of the rod?

Its either the selector arm that has an issue now, or the pin that is spring loaded in the body of the trans - that buggered. I don't know how that could have happened though?

Mine started with 2nd as yours is, then also 3rd and 5th. It's not that it popped out of 2nd, it was not totally in 2nd to start with.

syncro ring can get jambed onto a stop and it locks out that gear.

I was thinking this originally, since I was putting so much pressure on the shifter tubes to put the short shifter on.

But it shifted (while, as I said, "tight") just fine for 450 miles. All the other gears. Just doesn't want to go into second.

you might want to check the front are of the trans where the lockout pins are inserted as one of the caps may have come loose, if this isnt the case you may have to pull the trans out to investigate

the stop block gets screwed up between the synchro rings causing the ring to expansd, then there is no way the shift band can get around the synchro. i had a tranny with no first gear because of this issue. you're most likely going to need to take it all apart, but it's not that difficult if you have a press and a little help.

I don't see how that can happen, but from your comments, it obvious does. I suppose if there is too much allowed distance in the entire gear assembly from front to back?

I just rebuilt an early 5spd and it works perfectly (stationary, in the garage. ) So I may have to swap them and do it over.

I've never heard of this, and it was JUST rebuilt 2 years ago, and only about 10k miles. Weird.

I've already done three jobs on it and nothing was removed that was not needed for the job. Driving it today. Different wheels, injector plugs cleaned, grounds cleaned.

Its almost like I'm a normal owner.
