Great post! I am about to do this same job. I noticed that my car does not currently have a boot over the existing coupler. It's clean and dry but I live in California and I don't seem to have any of the corrosion issues I see in so many post.
Just how important is the boot? Also I think the job maybe easier with a gin and tonic
Is Corona really a beer or just a breakfast drink?

The 911 has a nice little hatch in the rear seat area to access this, as to why the engineers at P never did it for the 928 is beyond me.

Easy enough to make a little trap door. I believe someone else in this thread did so. I expected the worst with mine, given that it spent some time in both Chicago and Jersey. I guess I was lucky.

Vanster, I'd say WYAIT replace the boot. When the bushings deteriorate, so does the feel of your shifter. No reason to give Mother Nature easy access to ruining part of what makes a driver feel connected to the car!

You are absolutely correct about the boot. Until I read this post I had no idea I needed one. Yo Roger..got boot? The trap door idea sounds like plan as well

I would say, try the regular way first. Mine came out super-easy (dangerously easy, in fact). If I went through all the trouble of cutting a hole for that, I would have been seriously pissed off.

Totally agree. Accessing the "infamous blue hose," however = cut a hole.

I can not figure out what the purpose of the slot is for, does anyone have any insight on this? What Porsche was thinking by having the slot. Bushings with no slot is the way to go in my opinion.

Here is one theory from earlier in this thread.

Well guys after 4 yrs of frustration, I still have this ****** hole in between my rear seats, right at the hump and Im looking for ideas on a weld repair.

It's funny enough to make you wanna cry.

Used the search function and this old thread popped up.

Jadz928 come and share in my pain, let's have some laughs, and think of some ideas.

I'm back at it again, put too much money in her to let her beat me.
