Bill...."530 mile ride back last night on my trusty 82 CBX, which performed flawlessly, but I'm all better now." I believe a ride like that deserves a charity fund drive !

We were very lucky to have the esteemed Mr Ball accompany us to the SSCC again. I worked on the car for the 4 days preceeding the race so Bill & I had very little to do when we got there. Bill changed the LH and did a safety check then got to drive the car 30 or so miles up the canyon. The car passed Bill's muster and we put it to bed until Sunday.

Kudos to my wife for driving such a great race. She was in the 150 mph class and the final qualifing run before she will be permitted to run the car
@ Unlimited speeds. We pre-ran the course on Friday and I estimated the speeds ( along with Cheryl's concurrance) she should take the turns with the understanding that if the speed was to fast she could slow down and make up the time on the straights. I adjusted the course notes to account for the speeds and called it a day. On Sunday Cheryl was kind of nervous so the first 10 or so miles she was just barely making the estimated times. We came to the 11 mile straight and I told her that we needed to set the car on 163 and leave it there in order to have our cushion going in to the Narrows. At the end on the straight we had made up 25 seconds and were set.

I kind of relaxed for a while and helped her with the lines in the turns (to help her keep her speeds up) and didn't do a lot of time keeping or watching the GPS for about 20 miles. Just before the speed trap I noticed a car about 1/2 mile in front of us. I quickly located a mileage post and checked our time. Holy Sh*t we are over a minute ahead. She had really steped up her driving and had been exceeding my previously recommended turn speeds. The turns we had marked @ 150 she had been taking at 160. We slowed the car down to the 120's and started dropping about 6 seconds a mile. 15 miles later we came into the Narrows with just the right amount of cushion. I had estimated Cheryls speed in the Narrows at 115 mph on our practice run and we both agreed that would be about right.

4 miles later when we exited the Narrows we were 15 seconds early! Back down to 130 Mph for the next 5 miles and we are still early. Down to 125 and with only 1 mile to the finish we are on time. Cheryl punches the car and we go through the finish at 163MPH and 1.4 seconds LATE. Total Navigator error. I did not take into account the time to accellerate up to speed. My fault totally. Hang the navigator. This is going to cost me big time!!!

I profusely appologize to my lovely wife and asked for her forgiveness. We finally agree on proper restitution and I am forgiven. She really wanted a tropy in this one like her other starts but I didn't get it for her. At least she can now drive in Super Sport at Unlimited speeds.

Anyway since we were way out of trophy range we all decided to go back to the motel, pack up and head home. We had an uneventful trip back home. I hope Bill did also.

Thats all for my report as of now
Sincerely
Tim (the sh@**y navigator)

Tim, I think I see the plan. Not doing well navigating while proving excellent results driving.

Excellent report, I can almost feel the flow of the road while imagining following the lines throufh there.

I just arrived home I've been on the road since 3:30 this morning. Tim I will get all of the results to you in a bit.

Cheryl and Tim's time for the 150 class
  • 149.9001MPH avg - T/V+ 1.4390sec

My run in the 140 class
  • 139.8993MPH avg - T/V+ 1.6653sec - 5th place I need a navigator

So Bill the spread sheet is spot on. The problem is the Avg/Time per MPH that SSCC handed out

We did have a 928 on the podium Jim Dawson "89 S4" and his navigator Joe Privitelli took 3rd place in the 125 class - Nice job guys
  • 124.9499MPH avg - T/V+ 1.0390sec

I have a few photos to post as well, let me get the car off the trailer and a

Congratulations Cheryl and Tim on finishing the in the 150 class safely. That's the most important thing.
I guess I'll be running against Cheryl next year, or will you both be co-driving. If you're co-driving,
you might want Cheryl to navigate on the way back .

Matt, The times that SSCC post are disceptive. They list decimal point minutes with a colon, so
a target of 38:5714 is really 38.5714 minutes which is 38:34.3 (minutes:seconds).

Hey George,

Yes it's confusing to say the least, I was using the course notes you made for the NORC so I was in good shape. I was happy with 1.6653 running solo, I think I will bump up to 145 next May

A few photos from the event,

Congrats Matt. Great run for a solo.

Thanks for the pic's. Especially the Lincoln. It looks like it might lift off at about 130.

Hmmm. Except for the slowing down part, this sounds like Tammy's run at the Pony Express!

Glad you guys and Matt had a good time and that everyone made it through safely!

Did the ZR1 run the race or was the owner just there posing?

Default Reporting in...

I've been wanting to participate in the Silver State Classic Challenge (SSCC) for many years since talking with Bill Ball about it at a Sharktoberfest event several years back and following the posts of other participants, especially Tim and Cheryl Dey. This year, with a fellow 928 owner, Jim Dawson from Costa Mesa, I had my chance as a navigator to experience the thrill of this extraordinary event. Jim and I met at the 2006 Toys For Tots/Motor4Toys exotic car show charity event and discussed a possible team-up, since he had previous experience.

For those that don’t know, this is an open road race that traverses 90 miles of the two lane Highway 318 between the towns of Lund and Hiko, Nevada. The course has long straights, various types of turns, and a “narrow” twisty section. There are different "target" speed classes with a top “tech” speed that you cannot go over without being disqualified. The aim is to cross the finish line within a specified time at an average of your target speed. Our specific goal was to do the 90-mile run in 43 minutes and 12 seconds, averaging 125 miles per hour. This year, there were 123 drivers, most with navigators, entered in various speed classes from 95 MPH through 150 MPH in 5 MPH increment groups. In addition, there were 160, 170, 180, and UNLIMITED MPH speed classes.

Jim and I rented a U-Haul to trailer his Guards Red 1989 S4 to the event. We left Thursday and arrived at State Line before continuing up to Ely on Friday. After settling into our hotel and de-trailering the car, we proceeded to registration, signing our lives away, getting our event t-shirts, instructions, and sponsor stickers. Once the car was washed and stickers in place, we proceeded to gather for the traditional parade through town where we had the chance to have two local Boy Scouts ride with us while tossing candy to the on-lookers lining the street. After the parade, a dinner was held for all the participants, where stories abound and the evening is friendly.

Saturday morning was spent prepping for the Tech Inspection, where everything that will be in the car must be tightly tied down (GPS, cameras, water, etc.), the required gear for our class ready (gloves, helmets, 5-point seat belts, racing suit, fireproof socks, fire extinguisher, etc.), and proper tires. The rest of the day was spent gawking at the other vehicles and talking with the participants and organizers, attending mandatory navigator and driver/navigator meetings, and then going over our course and timing notes. Jim had driven this event five times before with his best time being 4 seconds off, but still coming in third place with that in 2004. We gathered course notes from his previous drives and those offered from wise 928 veterans (THANK YOU!) and spent Saturday night refining our original strategy and calculations before getting minimal sleep for the big day.

We left Ely Sunday morning around 6am to the pre-grid gathering at a truck-stop in Lund. Then, one-by-one, we were sent to the grid area just before the start line. Cars are guided to the starting gate with a stop for officials tightening down the harnesses, checking the arm restraints, and making sure there are no loose items. Then one last look for nails by four gentleman with knee-pads who request a very slow role to inspect the tires. This year, one car was turned away because of a found foreign object.

Finally at the start line, adrenaline pumping and heavy breathing steaming up the sun-glasses, we took off to run the 90-mile stretch. This was the first time that I experienced sustained triple-digit speed in a motor vehicle on a public road. All my anxiety and reservations were quickly shattered as I realized the 928 was built for this and it handled beautifully! I didn't get a chance to view the road or surroundings much because I was focused on verifying and relaying the statistics to the driver for most of the race. All our calculations with time, distance, acceleration to speed, banked time, reduced speed through the narrows, and final checks to the finish paid off. We were pretty much “on the money” the whole race, except for a surplus time of five seconds coming out of the narrows (my fault because I told Jim that he could be more aggressive). We made our adjustments to scrub off time for the last 18-mile stretch to the finish. I stopped our two watches at 43:12.58 (main) and 43:12.54 (backup), obviously a tad early on the trigger, because our official time was 43:13.0390, off (slow) by 1.0390 seconds. Our average speed was 124.9499 MPH, a speed variance of .0501. We reached a top speed of 137 MPH, but sustained 135 MPH during three periods throughout the race. We came in third out of nine entries in the 125 MPH class, securing trophies for our efforts.

I have to congratulate Jim Dawson for driving such an outstanding race. He was calm and cool and I think we worked well as a team for the first time. I’d like to thank fellow 928ers Tim and Cheryl Dey, Bill Ball, and Matt Edson (among many other SSCC veterans at the event) for supporting our efforts.

Jim has offered to by my navigator if I decide to run the Nevada Open Road Challenge (NORC) in May (the exact event with a different name). I'd have to enter as a rookie in the 110 MPH class with a tech (top) speed of 124 MPH. I’m psyched!!!
