I guess we'll find out if sharks really can swim - Ike on its way
I'm 60+ miles from the coast, and as of this time, they are still predicting hurricane force winds for 6 hours and tropical force winds for 24 hours. Living in a place called "The Woodlands" the biggest concern is the sheer number of trees and the damage caused by falling limbs etc.
Gas stations are running out of gas and in others the lines are out into the road. I filled up all our vehicles earlier this week and have an additional 35 gallons in the garage.
Unfortunately, both sharks will be left out of the garage - flooding is not a concern here - it wil be the flying debris.
Keeping a close eye on the storm track, but it is narrowing by the hour. As it stands it look as if the eye will come very close to us, but keeping us on the "dirty" side.

Hurricane Ike & Alicia
We're about 40 miles northeast of Corpus. If Ike ever makes the darn turn they predict we'll be okay. Just in case, we spent all morning putting plants, lawn furniture et. al. inside. Only our poor lonely tractor will be left out in the rain.
Many moons ago on August 18, 1983 Randy was living in the boonies near Manvel, Texas (south of Houston) when Alicia came to visit. He went to sleep around 10:30 after the evening news stated that Alicia had turned further west. Around 1 a.m. he awoke to her fickle presence and the eye later went over his house. Since that experience, he always makes enough preparations to survive the unexpected turns.
His favorite (not) memory of Alicia was the sound of one of the tornados it spawned. I wish I had pictures of him in the bathtub with the Rottweiler and Basenji. That would definitely be a picture worth framing!

Dude, bring them up here. Plenty of storage space.

Ken our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family first and the shraks second. I grew up in Houston and lived inthe Woodlands for a while. Beautful area but, as you said a hell of alot of trees that could be trouble.
I lived in Houston when Carla came through in 1961. I remember the damage the wind caused. Be careful. Hope it turns more north!!!!!

The funny thing is if Ike would of hit me I already planned to take off in the 928 to my old house in Cypress or stay with my uncle in Baytown...there goes that idea.

Former Vendor
I spent the last 2 days putting everything I'm working on (cores, projects both finished and in progress) up high.
Raw material, tools etc.
My shop is about 1/4 mile from the beach and the surge is already at least 5 feet above normal.
We appear to be in the clear for now in Corpus if the track remains as they predict, but I feel for the people up in Houston. Evacuation alone is a nightmare.

Since Katrina, our national psyche has gone psychotic with regard to evacuation of large population centers. In my opinion, anyone safe from flooding in a reasonably well built home is safer staying at home than evacuating. Don't dare say that in public; not politically correct.
Ever since Katrina, our fourth estate has convinced far too many Americans that Bush is responsible for Katrina and the government is responsible for preventing all future natural catastrophes... and paying for them!
We were once a nation of independent, self sufficient, take charge individuals. I fear we are becoming a puhling mass of spineless, drooling idiots.
This on 9/11.

We are staying here to fight it.
We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. Take that Ike!
