Man I feel your pain. 4 days ago I decided to use a previous thread and clean my MAF with the recommended CRC cleaner. I thought that this would be a simple 1/2 hr job. I put everything back and the bitch wouldn't start. Battery then died from cranking, I re-charged and for the next few days I had heart murmers that I might have fried my ecu. The more you love this car the more you hurt. Last night I found a 3 pin plug below the crossover fuel line (in the valley below the MAF connector) slightly disconnected (I had to remove that fuel line to plug the pins back in and tape it up). But in the end, it idles better, I had a previous thread where I complained that my idle control was not as responsive and that problem is also gone after the cleaning. The engine also feels stronger. This kind of pain, anger and hurt is all part of the experience of ownership. As others have written, have another beer.

Only 8 posts and he's going to burn her!
We know what you are going through. Take your time. You are building a knowledge base that is invaluable. When you light up the dash board and she fires, you will do the TB dance. Others will wonder, but you will know the satisfaction.

Guys, papatuki has not posted again here since yesterday. Someone should drive over to his house and make sure that car hasn't choked him to death.

WHEN I STARTED WORKING ON MINE I DID NOT KNOW WHERE TO CHECK THE OIL COULD NOT FIND THE STICK

Now I can almost fix anything on this car, you need to read, ask and look at how these things are engineered. Look in your tool box you maybe lacking the "I'll never use this tool", that you will find will help you. This car is well put together and your just lacking the experience and book knowledge, I hope you have a manual! I find that researching, printing out or book marking before you start then asking for the groups help will get you over this hump. If you start out expecting the worse thats what will happen. Remember if you want easy get a Honda, look at this as a chance to gain knowledge that very few have and be proud of it. It's frustrating because of your inabilities not the cars

Default I think I feel better now.

Okay. I've had a good cry and lotso wine. I barely feel my knuckles bleeding. I appreciate the responses from ya'all.
Obviously the solution is to not use the pump anymore. I don't know what it does anyhow. But, can you just do that? Will it confuse somehow the cars deep thinking process? I guess I'll try searching the list some-more for ......? At least till the drooling starts.
Fortunately in the great commonwealth of Virginia I can register the car as an antique next year and not have to inspect.
By the way I'm in northern va. and if any of you are ever in the hood, I'll be under the hood. PM for par-ticks.
And what's an OB? And you know, I'm in the mechanical trades and this does hurt my ego. I can fix anything.(mostly)
I did research this beforehand so felt prepared. Though my shop manuel is on CD and persnickety. I think it's a boot leg and I'd like a better version.
Thanks again for listening. Now that the ice is broken I won't feel so intimidated by this technology and all you engineer geniuses.
Should I stop now?

OB=Old Body. You should read the new user FAQ. It's got lots of stuff that is really useful.

The purpose of the air pump was to infuse some additional air before the cats so that they would more completely catalyze the exhaust gases. If you keep the stock cats, you should keep the air pump connected. Without it they could cause problems, dangerous problems.

If you're removing the air pump you should get some aftermarket cats and possibly a set of crossovers. They're not much more than a set of factory cats and you get more HP.

Good luck and hang in there.

Thanks Mike. So how big a job is the cats and crossover? And honestly, I've read the FAQ'S a couple of times. Me thinks my senility is exacerbating the A.D.D.

Actually the air pump is used only to assist in warming up the cats to operating temp. The pump output is diverted to the atmosphere after that time. Just fyi...

And by the way. How long do you think it would be before the dangerous problems manifest?

DING DING DING! We have a winner! This is REALLY what OB stands for...

MY preference (and I have been known to get QUITE testy about it) is that OB should stand for Original Body (ie. a 928 with NO spoilers) S should denote spoilered cars (though there were some NON-S cars that had the "competition package" that included the spoilers on the sad 4.5L engine but those did have the "S" brakes), S4 is obvious, GT would be an S4 w/ a 5spd trans but might NOT be used for '87/'88 S4 5spd cars, and the last and most importantly GTS, which is also quite obvious.

Now that the can of worms has been opened I am never coming back to this thread because I know to many of you will just egg me on!

Ah hell, to me it's anything older than '87.
