The Resivour has an internal filter that cant be replaced so its best to renew it so to add life to the Hydro system
Good info. Thanks.

Harvey,

Do a search for something like rack repair on this site, or search for items from Jon Holdsworth (Australia). He posted something about this about 6 months ago. IF you don't find it, e-mail me next week after I'm back home from Kauai, and I'll forward what I copied.

Cheers,

I just rebuilt a rack for a friend here in town, and it turned out beautifully.....
Used the seal kit from Rennbay..... Everything was there except that the rack rod OD to tube ID seal is one bigger teflon seal as opposed to a smaller teflon seal over an o-ring.....
The valve seals were the same teflon over o-ring seal design.....
I think it'd have been nice if the kit came with the copper washers for the pump feed and return line banjo fittings, but they are not included....
I'd read several places that the rack rebuild is difficult and rarely works, but it's actually easy.....
Just have to be sure to be organized and methodical......
Sorry, I don't know the size of this particular O-ring, but I'd bet it'd be easily sourced......

Thanks, Gary,

I didn't find the Holdsworth post but probably have enough info to change out a rack (I also checked Landshark of OZ). I'd still like to pursue just replacing the above-mentioned Oring. I can always replace the rack later if the leak gets worse.

Harvey,

If I recall correctly (and that's not a guarantee, regardless of the 3 months I spent in Vandal land), the info from Jon Holdsworth and someone else was about just replacing that seal. Please send me an e-mail next week and I'll see if I can find the info and return it via e-mail.

Gary,

A Vandal, eh? I work in the Vandal Admin building. Shane (from AK) is a "Maniac" from Orofino, just 30 very twisty, fun curves down the road. It sounds like you escaped.

I thought of pulling the seal and taking it to the hardware store and looking for a match but it would unlikely be the right composition for trans. fluid. And I'm guessing the size has to be precise. Also, I'm not sure how much work it would be to get that plunger piece out. It might be secured with some kind of obscure German brain-twister puzzle, like other parts on the car.

Later,

Harvey

Here you go,

I also have the kit from Rennbay and plan on rebuilding it this winter. I rebuilt the rack in my 951 and had no problems. Doesn't leak a drop

I haven''t tried, but I investigated all the threads related to rebuilds. The number of failures reported by capable owner-mechanics was a bit daunting. It seems that the potential of any given core is not related to the ability of the rebuilder. If you have the time, its probably a worth-while venture. I rarely have the time for reworks, so I opted to buy a unit from one of Roger's resellers.

Thank you, Great thread... I'm game to replace the ONE (1) O ring I mentioned early on..but I'm siding with others on buying good rebuild rather than attempt the whole thing and get some Orings mixed up.

From what I'm guessing, some rack rebuilders are probably better than others? Looks like lots of opportunities to get mixed up if you take a coffee break in the middle of the rebuild.
