Default emissions equipment

I'll be running my very last emissions test this weekend, dynoing my car in its completely stock form, and then starting to take things apart. Has anyone ever made a list of all the equipment that can be removed without affecting things? Cat and smog pump will be getting the heave-ho immediately, then looking into the more esoteric stuff.

BTW the cat is excellent (will be proved by the emissions test) and the smog pump is nearly brand-new. Is there a market for them? It would be nice to sell them for more go-fast parts.

Mark,

Someone on the list was looking for an air pump recently. Might do a search to see if it is still required. IIRC it is against federal law to sell a used cat so ebay is probably out on it.

Removing the cats and air pump are not going to help that much in the power department of an '83. If you feel it still necessary, grab some free flowing cats. Sorry, it just drives me nuts when people remove the cats when there is no reason in the world to do so when free flowing cats are available at such a low cost these days.

If you compare the US to Euro on the 78 & 79 engines the only difference is the air pump and cat. The 20 HP increase on the Euro is due to reduced drag and a freer flowing exhaust. The 83's should see about the same increase without the pump and a stock cat. Even going with a new free flow cat, it is a good HP gain for the money.

Well it will be interesting to see what happens. Dyno with all stock equipment intact will happen tomorrow. Then I'll remove the pump and install a Motorsports y-pipe, also leaning towards the Borla behind that. With that setup I'll head to the dyno again and verify any improvement. I'm just looking at also removing any unnecessary items (charcoal cannister, vent hoses, etc.) because I like it that way. I did a couple Rx7's and it's amazing just how much you can remove. Looked like a beer keg sitting in there with a carb on top and nothing else.

I was not aware of that. I sold mine to someone that was interested in using it for measurements to build an X-pipe. Maybe there's interest in it for those purposes?

I don't think it's against the law, there's a lively trade in catalytic converters on the web, just do a quick search. They trade hands all the time.

It is very much against fed law to remove or tamper with emissions equipment.
