Default Fog lamp replacements 100Watt

Would anyone discourage me for any reason about replacing my fog lamp bulbs with these 100 Watt units?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/100-W...4506.m20.l1116

Thanks,

Allen

P.S. Any advice on which H4 headlamp bulb replacement is best?

Hi Allen
I enjoyed your traffic stories. I would be a little worried that your fog light housing and lens may not be able to handle the extra heat of the 100W bulbs. Also I think the fog light lens is a little diffuse and you may have a lot of scatter. I wish we had driving lights in this location, then I would have considered HID bulbs which put out more light without more heat.
Good luck

Hi Allen,

Re: H4s bulbs...

This is what I have used for the past year with no change to my stock wiring on my H4 7". No issues so far.

Link to thread where some of this is discussed

So 110W max per side with an uprated fuse.

I went with these for replacement H4's

80W/100W H4's are fine but stock is OK too 55W/60W

100W fogs can be a problem if you have Stongard covers - too much heat...

There is indeed quite a bit of scatter with the Fogs - but its on the edge of resonable. I have HID's in my foglights - and the combination of much more light (about 5x the 55w bulbs) and a non optimal arc position wrt original filament position made me rework the reflectors - blanking out some of the lower (up) reflector portions with vinyl covers - lots of trial and error with this - but ultimately a good outcome. The HIDs are good for power - apart from the ignition phase they consume only about 35w - so very efficient. In the end is a lot of work to install for minimal realistic benefit unless you plan to run them as DRL's.

In town its atually quite practical to run with just the fogs - they are great for going around corners - lots of low peripheral light - this also make them even better as DRLs.

I'm here to testify about the lens cracking and reflector discoloration from using the 100W foglight bulbs. I do use them for DRL's, have Stoneguard covers on them. Right side lens is cracked. I'll end up with new assy's, and install the HID's sometime in the next few years... when I run out of spare 100W bulbs.

FWIW, I bought a bunch of the 100W H-3 bulbs from Wal-Mart a few years ago, and have been slowly using them up. They don't last very long in this service for me, again because of the extra heat in the housing. If you do decide to go with this option, be sure to get a dozen so you'll have spares.

BTW - if you want maximum light output from the H4's or the Fogs with ~100W bulbs - you need to consider local relays and upgraded wiring back to the alternator (Jump post at least).

With the stock wiring I'd expect you are losing of the order of a volt across the wiring alone. Losing 1v or about 1/14 of the total available voltage makes a huge difference to light output (lumens) since its proportional to ~V^3.4
