Default Timing belt Irony

I was thinking that it was about time to do the TB/WP job on Ang's car yesterday and she was driving her '90 home tonight and called me asking what the "Toothed Belt Warning" was on her digidash.

Had her shut it down, restart and continue on as I checked her records on the last time it was done. Get this.

Aug 26th, 2003.
89,500 miles.

She currently has 139,500 miles and look at todays date. WOW. Talk about weird.

So I'm going to check the tension and all that I can see from the right hand cover and decide from there if I'm taking a day off work tomorrow to do the entire job. If all looks ok, I'm just going to retension and plan a weekend in the near future to do it all.

********Arg, she just called to say it came on again..... heading out the door.

I know exactly how this is. I've been working on others so much that neither of ours have been touched. I've set aside this labor day weekend for the '88, all the underside stuff I've been putting off. MM, Trans mounts, Trans filter, Steering rack bushings, hell, I might even do my brakes.

Then again, I might be doing a TB/WP job.

Glad she got it home ok.

Sean don't be a wuss - check the tension with your finger like the Pros do and you should be good for another 5 years.

Tension check is done and I know what I have ahead of me in the near future. The belt felt loose to the touch, but on the Kempf tool it was on the loose side of the window. When I tightened it up to the other side, it still felt loose but no warning light. The belt looks great, the roller I could see looks great, tad bit of wear on the cam gears. I would make it for another year or so with no worries, but I don't do things that way.

I've done a dozen of these things but why is it it's always different on your wifes car.

I have been negligent on this car. Must have been the envy I have that hers is near mint and mine is, ahem, not yet.

It's going to need the usual plus some cam gears, new belts and hoses, MM's are total trash (worse than mine) and I think the tensioner has just recently leaked all of the oil out of it. SooooOooooo, after I get all of the fun stuff done on mine this next weekend I'm going to take a weekend and get hers done too.

FAR OUT!

I had an even better one. I brought my imac into the apple store as i later found out it required a new logic board (apple speak for motherboard) and I find out that the warranty was extended on that model for 3 years. Well i went in and the tech checked the original sale date and it was sold on the EXACT SAME DAY, 3 years ago! TO THE DAY! I think it was August 16th 05 and i was in there on 8/16 08

We both need to play the lottery!

Heh, lucky huh.

Here's another one. I bought a Kawasaki Jet Ski back in '96. Had it out for some fun and the engine seized up on me and as I got it loaded back up, I called the dealer. The warranty was for 1 year, the engine blew on day 364 at 3pm. I remember I picked the thing up at 4pm. I towed it back to that dealership that night and they gave me a new engine. The oil pump crapped out on me. Talk about a close call.

Should have played the lottery that day too.

That's some of the weird shyte that goes on around Sean. hehehehe,

The failure mode for toothed belts is often shearing of the teeth. If you take a bright light and mirror you can look at the juncture of the toothed belt and the flush part of the inner belt, you might see some cracking. Push on back of the belt with your thumb and look for cracks near the tooth base.

Sean: Why is it different?
I've done a dozen of these things but why is it it's always different on your wifes car
Well I'll tell you why it's different
1) How many other customers are you sleeping with? (rhetorical question only. DO NOT ANSWER THIS OUT LOUD
2) It is different working on cars because you want to versus because you have to
3)If you goof up something on your wife's car, there is a distinct possiblity that you hear about that goof up for the rest of your natural born life
4)There is shorter repair time element involved in working on your wife's car before she deems it unfixable and/or a POS.

Sean, I'm sure there are additional reasons, but these are the ones I came up with as fast as I could type in the space of about 2 minutes. Call if you need assistance.

I hear ya John, I hear ya.

This morning she left for work in it, and came right back. Her speedo only goes up to 20mph. I got that look again.

Now to research the speedo issue.

The cobbler's children have no shoes...

I know what you mean. My car is almost always last on the list of things to do, so although it's only been down for a total of 4-5 weeks in the past 2 years, none of the other cars have been off the road more than a week.

That is a freaky coincidence though. 5 years AND 50k miles.
