Default Help finding Temp II sensor

Hey guys.

After searching the archives I think I have narrowed down a cold start issue to the Temp II sensor.

I looked through the PET6 but having some trouble narrowing down where it is exactly in the engine bay.

Does anyone have a picture handy where they can point me in the right direction?

This is an 84' US.

Thanks a bunch!

Front of the motor near the water neck inlet should be a blue connector.

Hello Shawn,
I have an '84 as well.....here's a pic of where the TEMP II sensor is....follow the green arrow. The sensor directly behind the TEMP II is the coolant temperature sending unit that feeds the temperature guage on the instrument cluster.

Dwayne................thanks!! No trouble finding it now.
Next question of course is how do you get a wrench to turn that nut, pretty tight in there.

Is there a special wrench, or do I need to move the DIST out of the way?

Thanks again!

Did you test it yet, if not do that first.
It is two sensors in one, using a meter so one side to ground read each contact independently. With motor cold each side 3.6 K ohms hot 360 Ohms. If it shows Ok go to your Lh connector 2 & 5 , "not sure if that is correct for your year you need to search to check correct pin-outs", and see if the readings are the same if so your Temp II is fine.

Will do on the testing..............is this a test while cranking the motor or not cranking?

Thanks!

Tested.................I am a noob, but learning!!!!
I assume the test was the actual leads (connectors) once the plug was removed, not actually testing the terminals on the sensor?

Cold engine:
7.8k on lead one
0.0 on lead two (get a flash, but not a steady reading, wold flash anywhere from 2-8k.

I put the meter on the terminals of the sensor and got nothing on either one, so I am assuming that the test was for the leads, not the sensor?

Many thanks!

Alright I feel like an complete *** for asking the question, but you gotta learn somehow right............so please be kind.

I am testing the sensor:
1. Red goes to the terminal on the sensor right?
2. Where does the black go?

I tried black on the anything metal, but get nothing.
If I put black on the other terminal I get a reading, but I thought that
was not the right way to measure the sensor?

So please, treat me with kid gloves?

Red to the terminal.
Black to what?

Yes, red should go to one of the terminals on the sensor. Black should go to ground - like the bolts that hold the cross-brace in place.

Also, make sure your testing for Ohms and not volts.

Pretty bad that I had to ask about the ground, but I was touching the black probe to anything metal!!! Bolts on the Cross-brace and anything else metal, but getting no reading on either tab............I thought I was doing it wrong.

So to re-cap:

1. Unplug the leads into sensor.
2. Test terminals on sensor, red to terminal and black to ground.
3. Ignition stays off this whole time, keys are out of the ignition.

Result is no resistance on either terminal.
The ignition does not have to be on right?

So if this is the case, is it safe to say I need a new Temp II?
The symptoms I have been having are; after car sits overnight it is hard to get started......cranks fine, I hear the FP but no catch. Maybe turn the key 3 times, then it catches and stumbles for a few, then good to go!!!! Fires right up any time after that on the first turn of the key...........only when sitting overnight will it have this issue.

Andrew............thanks for the help by the way.

Shawn

Don't listen to those two L-Jet 'experts'. They are trying to tell you how to measure a LH-Jet Temp II ('85-up), which has two sensors.

The L-Jet Temp II is only one sensor, and you measure between the two terminals. A few K ohms when cold, a few hundred ohms or less when hot, but should not be zero. It may be fine when hot, or cold, but sometimes not both.

Porken.............words of wisdom, thank you.

This is an 84'.

When measured between the 2 terminals I get 2.06. Is that within spec for that sensor?
