Busted Lug nut -victory at last
Just a quick update on my busted lug nut fiasco. I snapped the top off an aluminum lug nut that the tire shop cross-threaded. To get it off I did the following. First I bought a 19 mm Rigid bi-metal hole saw at Home Depot. The hole saw fit pretty closely around the lug stud. I used the saw to cut the remaining lug nut out. It worked like a champ on the soft aluminum. When you do this be very careful not to go too deep and cut into the wheel.
After I cut the lug nut out, I was left with a thin layer of aluminum on the stud and the wheel still wouldn't budge. I oredered a steel lug nut from our good friends at 928 Int'l and it came yesterday. I drove the steel lug nut onto the stud and when it hit the aluminum I torqued it about a 1/4 turn at a time. The sharp steel lug nut cut and broke the remaining thin layer of the aluminum lug nut. Finally, after two weeks I had the wheel off with absolutely no damage to the lug stud or wheel. So this method works if you ever break a lug nut. It took me two weeks this time. It'll take about 10 mins next time. Now I just have to get the front wheels off.
