928 Tiptronic
I had the good fortune to drive a Cayman S with Tiptronic this afternoon. What a great little car! The Tiptronic performed superfast up and down shifts using nothing but my thumb. I had driven neither Cayman nor Tiptronic before - I felt completely comfortable with both in less than 5 minutes of seat time. I couldn't help but think how nice my '91 S4 would be with the shifter paddles on the steering wheel. I have no idea if this is anywhere near feasable except in our imaginations. 'Be nice though.
There was once a company somewhere in Texas if I recall correctly that fabricated electronic shifting for manual transmissions and put buttons on the steering wheel, one for upshifts and one for downshifts. I was contemplating doing this for my 914/6 using the stock transmission. The cost was around $4500 or so. Since I am not supposed to use a clutch, it would remedy my situation. However, I bought a 928 instead so I never acted on this thought. The company is (was) called I-Force or something like that. Google several keywords and maybe you will find it.
Has anyone checked with Mercedes to find a similar concept in one of their cars? They come from the same market area and city.
