Hi Nicole,
I went as high as 15 without any problems but would not recommend anything higher. Stan posted that 20 psi will likely blow off the reservoir seal. Others have posted that on manual transmissions, the blue hose should also be monitored/checked/clamped as it can blow off as well. When I operated mine, I tried 12 PSI at first but it wasn't long before pressure reached 10 or lower as brake fluid was pushed out from the caliper nipples. Therefore, I pumped it to 15 and it stayed in the 10-15 range longer. I felt comfortable with anything between 10 and 15 but not anything higher than 15.

I'm not sure that higher pressure does anything for getting more bubbles out. It would cause faster flow but I don't see how that would do anything. IIRC, I did mine at low pressure just because I didn't want any mess if something came apart. Remember also that where you put the bottle can make a difference-- every couple feet of height changes the effective pressure by about 0.8PSI.

I've been really careful to not push air through the ABS pump. I suspect that there are high spots in there that just don't want to vent easily. It may be that we can come up with a way to power the motor in there similar to the way you force a flush on the PSD system. That would really do a job on brake fluid flushing, at the risk of a BFM (a mess) if you aren't careful at the bleeding end. Anybody looked at or thought about this option?

I just did mine yesterday. Slight pressure loss shown by the gauge, but pressed on. at 15psi, got some bursts of bubbles out the bleed tube, but put that down to air being sucked in at the nipple. All went well until the end - had air in the feed tube to the reservoir when I closed the last nippple up, released pressure from the tank, but in trying to undo the cap to the reservoir, lifted the rear end of the reservoir out of its grommet, and dumped most the contents down the inner guard. just made a mess - it had leaking grommets when I got it, and a bad pedal. Once I got the cap off with channel locks, and topped it off, I had a high and hard pedal, so all good. The Motive needs swivel connections to make it more friendly!!!

"D",
Very nice post.
Will be doing this by spring.
Local brake house's looked at me REAL STRANGE LIKE when I asked how much to flush the brake
system.
Every case at every shop here in Midland, TX was, " we gravity flush" ....
thanks again for the post and everyone adding suggestions.

JP-

I used an air-hose quick connect fitting at the cap. Let's the cap turn without twisting the hose, plus I can disconnect the hose and avoid fluid spills when finished.

Dr Bob, will try that , at least being ready for a next time, or whan somebody else needs to do it. I can get all the fittings at work. how do those fittings go with passing brake fluid , or do you just use them as swivels, and never disconnect them?
tks

Great write up with pics, but whats wrong with using the wife or significant other to pump the brakes while you open and close the bleeder nipple? This has been the SOP since cars were invented

I added a small piece of tubing to the inside of the cap that screws onto the reservoir that is approx. 1" long. When you release the pressure the excess fluid is sucked backed into the power bleeder leaving the fluid at the correct level.

Nothing wrong but as another power bleeder fan can vouch for their convenience.

My wife would soon get tired of me barking at her to pump then release the pedal. More importantly (depending on how tolerant your SO is) the traditional method carries a risk of pushing the master cylinder seal beyond its normal travel into gunked up section of cylinder, where it can easily be damaged.

Honestly, between the brake bleeder and my Tom-Tom with Marilyn Monroe voice, my wife’s feeling kind of obsolete…

Very nice write up!

Motive sells some really nice catch bottles that have the pressure relief and a lanyard to hang them on the suspension while doing the bleed.

You can get them at Pelican in a set of 2.

JP:

I use the disconnect all the time, with multiple caps for the different cars. No problems so far.

Great write up Dwayne! I appreciate the detail. Already copied it along with the pics into Word, printed it out & put it in my 928 Maintenance book so I'll have it when I'm ready to do mine.

I used a power bleeder several years ago and it worked fine.

When I try it now nothing comes out of the bleeders. The standard two person method works OK.

Any ideas why?
